In Tokyo, Biden says would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan, in a series of critical comments about China he made in Tokyo that an aide said represented no change in U.S. policy on the self-ruled island.

Biden’s comment, made during his first visit to Japan since taking office, and as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida looked on, appeared to be a departure from existing U.S. policy of so-called strategic ambiguity on Taiwan.

China considers the democratic island its territory, part of “one China”, and says it is the most sensitive and important issue in its ties with the United States.

When a reporter asked Biden during a joint news conference with the Japanese leader if the United States would defend Taiwan if it were attacked, the president answered: “Yes.”

“That’s the commitment we made,” he said.

Ukraine 2022 seems like a much more likely model, assuming China ever makes it across the Taiwan Strait, which is considerably wider than the English Channel that stopped Napoleon and Hitler.

The US has legitimate, essential interests on and around Taiwan.

Unlike Ukraine.

“The point is, what evidence of willingness and ability of the whole people of Taiwan to fight a bloody, ultimately failing, war with China would justify mussing one hair on the head of a single American sailor or marine? “

1. It’s irrelevant whether the people of Taiwan are willing to fight to the death to resist a Chinese occupation. The US has vital interests on and around Taiwan and those should be defended.
2. “Ultimately failing” would be any Chinese attempt to occupy. They do not have the force projection capability to cross 100 miles of open sea and fight even a marginal military. Even only Japanese involvement would ensure the Taiwan strait would be a graveyard for 10s of thousands of PLAN/PLA military. A shooting gallery for the ages.

The US, using air power alone, could ensure not a single ship crosses that strait.

“It isn’t true that the U.S. gave Taiwan a guarantee to defend it from the P.R.C. Never happened.”

There are several agreements starting with the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty that was never legally revoked and can still be held in obeyance, the variations and amendments to the Taiwan Relations Act, and several classified agreements between the US and Taiwan that can be invoked to require US defense of Taiwan from foreign aggression.

It wouldn’t be the first time his handlers had to come out to try to backtrack and cover up for something stupid he said. I still don’t understand why they keep letting him go out in public and talking to the press. It was plainly obvious why they kept him in the basement most of the campaign.

Thank God Biden made that statement. Just maybe he avoided the war that is building - from China.

Yes, Biden and Company are brilliant strategists. You have to hand it to them for kicking off all of the recent events by handing over $80 Billion in top-of-the-line military equipment to terrorists as we ran from Afghanistan. When the Russian's saw that along with his statement, that nothing would be done if it was a “minor incursion”. It told them exactly what to do.

Actions speak louder than Biden's idiotic mouth. The Chinese couldn't care less what they senile old fool says. They know from his actions that nothing meaningful will be done if they do whatever they want. Do you believe that the “sanctions” are hurting Russia? When 80% of the world's population ignores them do you think that they work? Russia is an exporter of both food and energy. Their revenue stream just doubled. And the $40 Billion with no strings attached for Zelinsky and Co... whose pockets are being lined with that money?

It’s possible that China will propose an arrangement like Hong Kong 1997, but once China has its people in place on the island, if China violates such an agreement, there is no way to force China to keep its word.
