WASHINGTON — The House voted on Tuesday to grant its aides the legal protections to form a union, the most significant step in more than a quarter-century to ensure that the chamber’s staff members can bargain over their working conditions without fear of retaliation.
The vote came amid pressure from aides, particularly junior staff members, who have become increasingly open about their frustrations with the low pay, long hours and notoriously difficult work environment on Capitol Hill. It marks the latest move by the Democratic-controlled House to stem the exodus of career staff members leaving for higher pay and more stable jobs in the private sector and elsewhere.
And it comes amid a string of prominent unionization efforts and labor actions across the country, including among political organizations, at a time when Americans are reassessing their relationships with work.
The resolution — which covers both political and apolitical staff in the House — passed 217 to 202. It does not need Senate approval or a presidential signature to take effect, and is expected to be implemented shortly.

Just wait until union organized house staffers decide to go on strike against a Republican-dominated Congress.
NO constitutional for federal support of unions either inside or outside of government.
NUKE ‘EM!!!!!
Maybe the House should learn to do more with less, engage in productivity improvements?
When they go on strike no work will get done in CONgress. None of the ‘CONgress critters’ know what to do.
If the COS folks can get their act together, this is another issue we need a new Amendment for.
“In order to prevent conflicts of interest and loyalty, no person or persons who receives regular compensation for work performed from any government entity at any level including but not limited to Federal, State, County, City, regional boards, school districts, municipal districts and such, may organize to collectively bargain for compensation or work conditions, with the exception of skilled professional labor providers such as electricians, plumbers and the like. Clerical and non-physical professions including administration, teaching, medical services and similar professions are not exempted from this amendment”
This would obviously need some re-wording but you get the point.
Unions are for people who’s jobs can be performed by any random monkey stumbling down the street
Sometimes doing nothing is better than the crap legislation they propose.
We’re safer when they are not in session.
” .... with the exception of skilled professional labor providers such as electricians, plumbers and the like. ...”
Why did you make this exception? There should be no exceptions! No government unions period! You allow any exceptions and over time ‘creative lawyering’ will negate the act.
Though I think this should only apply at the federal level. Any more is federal overreach. There’s too much of that already!
Well, the staffers are supported by taxpayer’s money, so I don’t support a union for them. I have some sympathy. If you were to put all the House members on one side of a room, and all the staffers on the opposite side, the average IQ of the staff would probably be 20 or 30 points higher than the Congress critters. The staff do all the work and the members of the House and Senate just parrot what their staff write down for them.
Agreed!
Striking is the one thing government workers cannot do.
Staff should be fired not unionized.
This provides yet another excuse for an already unresponsive political body to avoid doing anything constructive.
CONgress will cost more and do even less now.
they’re working for us, the taxpayer. IOWs, if they strike, they’re striking against us, and their bosses are negotiating against us.
This is BS.
How many republicans voted for this....?
JFK authorized government employees to unionize via an Executive Order. Now that they are unionized that Executive Order will probably never be nullified. Funny how Democrats can nullify Republicans Executive Orders but not visa versa.
I believe LBJ later codified it into law. So another EO will not solve the problem. It will take legislation.
Even FDR believed their was not place for collective bargaining in the Federal government.
Can these parasites not turn to sh!t everything they touch, and break every norm to burden us with their stupidity and financial duplicity.
