The Post Office photographs all pieces of mail and as I understand due to the anthrax letters sent out after 9/11.

On the USPS app, I can see what’s in my mailbox before I actually walk down the street to open it. It’s called Informed Delivery and I love it. So you’re right that the PS takes a picture of the mail.
