LONDON (Reuters) -In a sign of Russia's urgent need to bolster its war effort in Ukraine, parliament said on Friday it would consider a bill to allow Russians over 40 and foreigners over 30 to sign up for the military.
The website of the State Duma, parliament's lower house, said the move would enable the military to utilise the skills of older professionals.
"For the use of high-precision weapons, the operation of weapons and military equipment, highly professional specialists are needed. Experience shows that they become such by the age of 40–45," it said.
Currently, only Russians aged 18-40 and foreigners aged 18-30 can enter into a first contract with the military.

America did the same not that long ago in the GWOT.
We need the same in EVERY war.
Really? Example please.
If you are Comrade Xi two thoughts must be formulating. 1) If the Russians are having such a hard time attacking an adjacent target, just how will my combat inexperienced and untested equipment fare attacking over 90 miles of open ocean if the Taiwanese resist? 2) Can the Russians really defend their Siberian treasure house and their rich Pacific Asia possessions?
A clear sign that the Russians are running low on trained cadre.
This is true. Im not sure that an invasion is the best course of action for China wrt Taiwan, but it opens the question of general readiness of all other parts of their armed forces. If I were them I would be demanding readiness reviews of their Air Force and Navy.
The USAF and USN probably would also benefit from such a thing, from a non-Pentagon third party.
MSM’s leading BS artists are not taken seriously anymore!

Well, that's a really nice way to say "drafted."
But, I'm over 50 now and the Armed Forces say I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 35 to join the military.
They've got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join until you're at least 35.
Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. If we can't kill the enemy, we'll complain them into submission. "My back hurts!" "I'm hungry!" "Where's the remote control?"
An 18-year-old hasn't had a legal beer yet and you shouldn't go to war until you're at least old enough to legally drink. An average old guy, on the other hand, has consumed 126,000 gallons of beer by the time he's 35 and a jaunt through the desert heat with a backpack and M-60 would do wonders for the old beer belly.
An 18-year-old doesn't like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys get up early every morning to pee.
If old guys are captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd probably forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.
Boot camp would actually be easier for old guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we actually like soft food. We've also developed a deep appreciation for guns and rifles. We like them almost better than naps. (They could lighten up on the obstacle course, however.) I’ve been in combat and I didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.
I can hear the Drill Sergeant now, "Get down and give me...er...one."
And the running part is kind of a waste of energy. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.
An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to actually carry on a conversation, and to wear pants without the top of his butt crack showing and his boxer shorts sticking out. He still hasn't figured out that a pierced tongue catches food particles, and that a 400-watt speaker in the back seat of a Honda Accord can rupture an eardrum.
Yep, it is a wise policy employed by those less arrogant.
One difference between Taiwan and Ukraine is that the latter has a land border with friendly countries that are flooding it with aid (weapons, humanitarian assistance, etc.) and that allow millions of legit war refugees (women, children, sick and elderly) leave the combat area, letting the Ukrainian men focus on bringing the pain to the katsaps, knowing their families are safe.
Taiwan can easily be blockaded and starved out by the CCP navy. The only way the US and other friendlies to punch through such a blockade to come to Taiwan’s assistance would be a direct confrontation w/ CCP forces (which we won’t do). Taiwan better become the world’s biggest prepper and stock up for a prolonged siege.
Totally agree on point #2. China could grab itself a lot of territory for its massive population and a lot of natural resources with very little effort.
I tried to do the same in my late 50's in late September, 2001.
It was the first time I saw a Marine (recruiter) afraid of me.
It was the Old Wise Navy Sailors that kept me alive in Vietnam, and it's that kind of Warrior we always need.
I was so frustrated that I signed up here at FR.
NOW I know how valuable Old Wise Warriors are.
NOW I know how valuable Old Wise Warriors are.
There’s always Rushs’ Amazon battalion.
And very few days to do it in.
They've already enlisted in the pro-abortion army until they are called back up to the BLM rioters army.
Those extremely small size chips go primarily to the US and China. If China were to invade it not only would crush our economy. It would crush their own. Those chip factories are the most heavily defended parts of Taiwan. Most likely the Taiwanese would destroy them before they would let them fall into the hands of the CCP. So, the CCP can sabre rattle all they want. Not to mention, they would actually have to cross the water to actually invade Taiwan.
