The hospitals and the insurance companies.

Has nothing to do with doctors. These are hospital bills
Doctors are not paid those fees. Our fees are well set

Most non medical people are ignorant scum who think they understand the complexities of medical economics. Feels good to be besmirched, doesn’t ir.

Moron.

I just got a bill from the hospital for imaging services. $60,600 for twenty five minutes of work. That is five times more than I could find on any hospital’s or insurance company’s website.

Plus $1,000 for a shot of fentanyl which was so weak I felt nothing (I suspect it was saline).

The hospital has a price list, but not for the imaging CPT codes.

It has been said by Karl Denninger of the Market Ticker (https://market-ticker.org/) that the cost of medical care alone, given historical price inflation, will bankrupt the United States. It is not an opinion, it is a mathematical fact.

Boilerplate has gotten around that, but if the justice system was honest, it wouldn’t recognize boilerplate.

Hospitals and medical clinics routinely violate just about every consumer protection statute I can think of. I'll believe it's serious when hospital execs and administrators start doing perp walks for fraud.

That's also true of many other businesses like auto repair, who might farm out brake turning or an engine rebuild.

But if they give you an estimate of $1300, they can't come back and charge you $13,000.

Why did she go to a hospital not approved by her insurer?

She asked the hospital if they were in network and the hospital lied.

“$60,600 for twenty five minutes of work.”

Whoa! Someone in my family had a PET Scan done in hospital — one of more expensive imaging procedures — for $5,500.

Only the insurance provider can answer the question about whether a service provider is in-network. And hopefully provide the correct answer.

a lot of hospitals had to close their emergency rooms because so many people used it as a free clinic. The worst of them will get a “free” ride to the hospital by calling 911 and complaining of non-existant chest pains.

Doctors /= Hospitals.

I had to self-pay for surgery to re-attach a ruptured patellar tendon, and the surgeon, whose skill and experience made it possible to walk again with a brace for the rest of my life, was the cheapest charge of the whole process.

The anesthesis's aide charged twice what he did.

Hopefully is the word.

I had a surgery set up everything carefully calculated with a lot of "help" from my insurance company to get it all right.

Less then a week before the hospital called to tell me my insurance not going through properly.

I would have been stuck with a major bill if they had not been alert.

Then perhaps you should never utilize one

“Most doctors are very caring and compassionate. It’s the hospitals that get greedy with $100 bandaids and $10,000/day hospital stays.”

I agree. Most doctors now work under medical corporations whose bottom line is money, not patient. Insurance company beancounters have the same interests. Add to that the cost of millions of illegals and there you have it.

A free market in medicine would solve most of the problems.

From the article:

"hospitals can’t predict exact care costs in advance "

True, but they can predict the expected costs up front pretty damn accurately thanks to computers (you can do an internet search on the term if you want to know more about them - can be pretty darned handy).

Any "surprises" would be based on patient complications -each complication also having an easily pre-computed cost to deal with it.

which in itself is not fair. That should be disclosed along with what it costs.

I was told I needed surgery and it would cost $40,000. It was my doctor who told me to negotiate for a cash payment. I got the surgery for $2500.00 cash.

Considering the rate of physician error related deaths these days, perhaps you SHOULD.

I disagree that “Most doctors are greedy corrupt scum.”

Maybe you missed the neo-freeper memo. Since COVID, doctors are the enemy. They are part of the Big Pharma Industrial Complex. They are all trying to kill you. They might seem nice, but they're just murderous nazis in white coats, filling you with poison. Hating doctors on neo-FR is as cool as hating cops at a BLM rally. /s, sort of...
