Yellen to Unveil Plan to Address Global Food Crisis

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw that she will release a plan later this week to address the worldwide food crisis and food insecurity that has been exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Yellen visited Poland and Belgium ahead of the Group of Seven finance ministers’ meeting in Germany on Thursday and Friday.

She praised Poland for taking in millions of Ukrainian refugees and working with other European countries to get Ukraine’s wheat and other much-needed food supplies out of the country to world markets, the Associated Press reported.

Shortages of wheat, barley, sunflower oil and other food staples usually supplied by Ukraine and Russia have sent food prices soaring worldwide.

Wheat prices in Chicago jumped by nearly 6% on Monday, to $12.47 a bushel, the highest in two months, and are up more than 60% this year. Russia and Ukraine together supply almost one-third of the world’s wheat.

The expected shortfall of Ukraine’s wheat and grain had led to expectations that other countries might be able to compensate, but India on Saturday announced it was banning wheat exports to manage its own overall food security amid rising food prices and hot weather.

India, second only to China in global wheat production, harvested seven million tons of wheat last year and initially said it would not stop exports. But the government changed its mind in response to rising inflation following two months of sweltering temperatures, the Financial Times reported.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has asked Russia to allow Ukrainian grain shipments through its Black Sea blockade, in exchange for allowing exports of Russian and Belarussian potash fertilizer now banned under Western sanctions.

Great, their bright idea will be that the US will sacrifice some of its food for the world raising prices more and emptying shelves here.

Hold the presses, a Democrat has a plan! Does it involve growing more food elsewhere, Janet? Because we’re in planting season right now, so you’d better get a move on.

Allow Russian exports? Didnt Yellen get the memo that Russia and Belarus were not going to export any wheat or fertilizer to “unfriendly countries” this year?

While shopping over the weekend, I noticed that canned sardines, oysters and salmon are still in plentiful supply.

I mention this because these are "superfoods" that will sustain us during hard times. For some reason, people never think of stocking up on those items.

“”Why is the US Treasury Secretary addressing this?””

Good question!! Don’t cabinet officers have a job description? What’s hers? I’d like to see it. I’d like to know what business this is of hers!! Put the old bat out to pasture with Biden.

“”she will release a plan later this week to address the worldwide food crisis and food insecurity””

That makes as much sense as the CDC giving orders to our government! I just don’t understand ANYTHING that’s taking place!

What the heck is she doing pushing her Troll nose in something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH HER.

She sounds as though she is a tenth grade student and she is promoting “World Peace.”

And they did that due to the “Golden Blockade” a decree by the US and the western powers stating they would no longer accept any form of payment from Russia (including gold) for vital machine tools and mechanization components without which the Russian economy would collapse. The west declared in 1930 it would only accept grain, the majority of which came from Ukraine. That played a large role in the famine. Notice history repeating itself here with Biden announcing that Ukraine “agreed” to empty out its grain stores of 20 million tons of wheat in order to help the west lower its food costs and feed itself. So what do you think will happen to Ukraine later in the year? Probably famine. And who will get the blame? You guessed it…
