MECHANICSBURG, PA— In picking a sure thing by endorsing state Sen. Doug Mastriano for governor in PA, former President Donald Trump has set off a chain of events that could cost Republicans the governor's office and ensure him a tough race in PA if he chooses to run for president.
Allegheny County Republican Party Chairman Sam DeMarco was stunned when the news hit social media: “I am very disappointed with the president's decision in picking Mastriano. It's not exactly going out on a limb supporting someone in the lead three days before the election; it does guarantee him one win in this state on Tuesday,” said DeMarco in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
Jackie Kulback, the head of the Cambria County Republican Party, a grassroots powerhouse who just recently took this post-industrial county from a Democratic-majority county to a Republican one, was furious at Trump’s decision to back Mastriano.
The president's endorsement of Mehmet Oz was very hard to understand to begin with; now we have a three-way, a very tight three-way race for the critical Pennsylvania Senate seat, and to most of us, it appears that Oz is beginning to fade. So, what does the president do? He's going to shore that up somehow and endorse a sure thing — it is very disappointing,” said Dave Ball.
Kulback said Trump’s interference in PA would be costly: “It will cost a very winnable governor's seat. Dave White or Lou Barletta could have easily beat Shapiro in the fall in a very good year for Republicans.”

PA couldn’t be in better hands than with Lou as our governor. I hope somehow he wins the primary.
That is absolutely incorrect.
He did run around for a while, sanctimoniously leading the charge to expose the irregularities and potential fraud in the 2020 election. Then he stopped talking about it after his critics began pointing out that the 2020 election debacle in Pennsylvania was only possible because of the stupid mail-in voting process that MASTRIANO HIMSELF helped pass into law in 2019.
They’re bitching because Trump is supporting a favorite. The PA GOP is doing what the pubbies always do; pulling defeat from the jaws of victory.
Sounds lie Trump should have stayed out of these races. Let Pennsylvanians decide who they want.
Trump's ego is more important than loyalty. That is why he picks so many lousy candidates and staff.
Mo Brooks stopped talking about election fraud and Trump pulled his endorsement. Now the Alabama Senate seat will probably be held by a Shelby clone and McConnell puppet.
If it accomplishes what the Democrats want it is not a backfire. What they want is not usually in the statement of goals in the bill.
Would not upset me at all. But whoever "somehow wins the primary" needs an out-of-the-box campaign like Youngkin.
The primary winner MUST hire every single person on Youngkin's campaign, down to the phone bank guy, because Democrats truly, truly fear Trump + Youngkin + their new winning purple-state formula:
"In no sane world and by no sound reading did Youngkin run without or away from Trump, though that’s one of the spins being applied to his election in a state that President Biden won by roughly 10 percentage points just a year ago. Youngkin simply chose Trump in spirit over Trump in the flesh, a Trump Lite tack sure to be mimicked by Republican candidates in the 2022 midterms and beyond.Political observers who say that Youngkin was a Never Trumper — proving the viability of that movement — are deluding themselves. He was a Stealth Trumper and Sorta Trumper who took pains not to offend or alienate Forever Trumpers.
I promise you that Ron DeSantis took note of how Youngkin used it. I promise you that every Republican Governor, Senator and House member who is up for re-election next year in a purple state or district paid heed.
They are testing the same proposition, which is that you needn’t choose between Trump sycophancy and Trump apostasy. There’s a halfway posture, a middle ground, and it can look to voters not like moral cowardice but like political prudence.
Trump allowed it. The former president was uncharacteristically even-tempered and restrained. Instead of taking offense at the distance that Youngkin kept from him, instead of taking the bait when journalists pointed that out, he professed to be unbothered. Trump claimed amity and mutual respect between the two of them. Don’t interpret Trump’s absence from Republicans’ campaigns with an absence from their calculations. Don’t overlook the homage to Trump in DeSantis’s flamboyant us-versus-them, own-the-libs theatrics: offering cash bonuses to unvaccinated police officers who relocate to Florida from blue cities or states, challenging cruise lines’ insistence that passengers be vaccinated. Trump has educated Republicans, and one of the lessons is to be more like him."
It makes Salena Zito furious, since she’s been badmouthing Mastriano.
Did you ever get a chance to see Joe Gale debate? He calls Mastriano Mail-Mastriano because he voted for mail-In voting. Mastriano didn’t show up at one forum I went to. The word was that he didn’t want to face Joe Gale there.
Trump didn’t endorse Mastriano until he knew he’d win.
There is a clear pattern here. I’m surprised many Freepers haven’t figured this out.
I am doing the same as you. I like Barletta he doe snot live to far from me and is down to earth.
Barnette I like as well.
I am disgusted Trump did not side with Barletta that man was the first to support Trump. Plus Barletta gave up his Congressional seat to try and beat Casey. Which did not work out.
Shapiro said Biden was going to win and I do believe he played some kind of politics for that to happen. Philly is a crap place and that is where they cheat. It ruins it for the rest of the state.
I like Lou a lot but uncertain if he can carry it to the finish line....there’s still a few days so we’ll have to see where it is Monday. I’d like to see him advance further by then.
Trump’s endorsement of Oz and Mastriano are disturbing. He is on an ego play here.
It is almost like this is not the same Trump we supported in 2016 and 2020.
I dislike him. I am an Independent. I changed my voting status to Republican to vote in the Primary.
I will go back to Independent after the primary.
When Independents say they can’t vote in primary’s because there is no Independent that is true but you can change your voting status temporarily to vote .
I think the headquarters for Washington Examiner is located in the same space as headquarters for BLM and Marc Elias.
Pennsylvania needs Trump. Trump doesn’t need Pennsylvania.
Are you an America-First guy?
Then why hasn't Trump pulled his endorsement of Perdue in GA?
