Beijing residents rushed to supermarkets on Thursday (May 12) as Chinese officials tried to curb mounting panic over a rumour the capital would be placed under stay-at-home orders.
The city has been trying to stamp out a wave of cases in recent weeks, closing subway stations and telling many residents to work from home, with hundreds of communities sealed off to contain cases.
On Thursday there were rumours online that authorities were about to impose a strict lockdown, prompting many to rush to food stores and stock up.

"I can't say for sure whether there will be a lockdown, but I'm definitely scared about it," a shopper surnamed Wang told AFP.

So where are the videos of people dropping “dead” in the streets and handy-dandy EMS folks popping out of the shadows to haul off the corpses? That was some real comedy the first go-round.
I don’t see how they could have unleashed it on the world knowing there’s a billion and a half of their own at risk. Bean counters writing off all their old? Make room for a 3 child policy?
It’s rather prudent to do this as opposed to starving to death in one’s apartment.

X-man has real live political opposition? Glad to hear it but find it inscrutable.
Shanghai is the center of power for Deng Xiaoping and his far more moderate followers. They are a threat to Xi in the Politburo, so are being dealt with in typical communist fashion.
