Many Americans considered a sudden loss of smell and tase a telltale sign of a positive COVID-19 infection, but new research indicates that may no longer be the case. As the coronavirus mutates into new variants, the likelihood that an infected person loses their sense of smell and taste seems to decrease.
Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) analyzed a national database of more than 3.5 million cases of positive COVID-19 infections and published their results in the journal Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. It showed that compared to rates of smell and taste loss during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020, the chances have significantly dropped as new variants have developed.

So its like the common cold then
Newer COVID-19 variants will cause stupid Americans to accept masking, lock downs and mail in voting.....again.
So, how many different viruses did the ChiComs release here? I think there were at least two. I got something in February 2020 that was like a flu. Then, in September 2021, my wife and I got something much worse, that nearly killed my wife (15 days on ventilator, 31 days hospital total). That one caused my taste and smell to change.
That’s new and improved Covid.
• Patients infected with more recent variants are at a significantly lower risk of developing associated chemosensory loss (Oto Head Neck Surg. 2022;Published May 3 DOI: 10.1177/01945998221097656). Compared with the initial/untyped variant set as the baseline, the odds ratios for alpha, delta, and omicron (December 27, 2021–February 7, 2022) were 0.50 (95% CI, 0.45-0.55; P < .0001), 0.44 (95% CI, 0.41-0.48; P < .0001), and 0.17 (95% CI, 0.15-0.18; P < .0001), respectively forhaving an associated smell or taste disturbance diagnosis.
Someone tell my nose and taste buds.
I got ‘rona late last week.
Smell and taste aren’t gone but definitely diminished
Oh Saint Fauci, save us from diseases that don’t have any symptoms!
Hypochondriacs are upset. They are losing excuses to virtue signal all their useless testing results on Fakebook and Tweeter
RE: Newer COVID-19 variants less likely to cause smell and taste loss
Newer Covid-19 variants also less likely to be lethal or deadly to those infected.
Yep! It’s the flu. Period.
Nah, the common cold.
My wife and I got the rona in August of last year. Lost all smell and taste for about a week. Weird experience. Couldn’t even smell gasoline. When I got my smell back, everything smells like dust.
Could be because you have a stuffy nose? I have two sons, one currently getting over it, the other had it at Easter. They aren’t anywhere near each other. (One in the SF Bay Area, and the other in the Midwest.) Both had stuffy noses, which of course, will diminish your smell and taste somewhat.
It sounds now very much like every garden variety virus/cold that I’ve had or seen. The one who has it now started mild symptoms on Tuesday but didn’t test positive until Thursday last week. Then he broke out in a fever that lasted two days off and on. He has no symptoms now but is still testing positive on the at home tests. The worst part for him is that he is isolating from his wife and 13 month old son, who just doesn’t understand why Daddy is only on the phone camera with him. Plus, he didn’t get to give his wife the break she had hoped for on Mother’s Day. That will have to come after he’s out of isolation. I hope tomorrow but it’s for them to decide.
More people must be taking zinc. ( a deficiency causes loss of taste and smell.)
We’ve learned a lot about the immune system, essential vitamins and minerals, repurposing drugs, the value of diet, exercise and maintaining a healthy weight during this 2 year fiasco.
We’ve also learned to distrust government health agencies, hospitals, physicians and pharmaceutical companies.
soon the new covid variants will be just like the normal yearly flu!!!
Friend still can’t taste or smell from Covid-19.
COVID... You mean that minor cold everyone was bitching about?
I just got over it. I’ve had worse colds. Only reason I did a home test is because someone I knew had it. I was curious.
Was that from one of the early strains before Omicron arrived?
Right. Both sons had mild cases. The younger son who had it at Easter had it at Thanksgiving of 2020. That first round he lost his taste and smell for about a week.
