“Bong bong” is his nickname. He has an actual name nobody uses. These nicknames are normally bestowed in childhood and dont necessarily have a meaning. And they can come from a parent, a sibling, a servant, a playmate, and just get repeated till they are semi-official.
Its a sad person who lacks a nickname in that culture.
“Bong” is actually a very common nickname. I cant think of another “Bong bong” though. Maybe because he was the Presidents son he needed an intensifier to “Bong”. He was, after all, no ordinary “Bong”. Its typical to repeat a word as an intensifier or infinitive in Austronesian languages.

There it is knarfster, Ferdinand Marcos Jr (Bong bong) won in a landslide. I rather liked Paquiao (Pac Man) My wife voted for Bong Bong. I kept asking, who is Bong Bong? They said Ferdinand Marcos Jr. I said, wasn’t one Marcos enough for you? But Ferdinand Marcos Sr (Ferdie) died before she was born. I believe he done in Benigno Aquino (ninoy) whom the airport is named after. Now, Sara (Inday) is Vice President. Her brother, who was vice mayor is now the mayor. We can’t get rid of the Dutertes 😀 No one knows what former President Duterte (Digong) is going to do. I don’t think he will run for mayor again.
My wife, who you already met in person, along with most of her friends and employees have weird nicknames, like Bhe Bhe, Obeng, Ging Ging, John John, shine, shony, My sister in law is also Inday, my brother in law is dudong, my mother in law is eling. I can’t keep track of them all. 😀
