Crews fighting the Calf Canyon-Hermits Peak Fire are up against high winds again, and because of those winds, they won’t be getting any air support. The fire is inching north, jumping the fire line on Highway 518 that firefighters have been trying to hold for weeks. The communities north of Holman are now being told to leave immediately.

Was this another controlled burn? Our biggest fires have been started by the Forest Service!

You won't hear much on the news about this, unless it gets close to Santa Fe.

Then the out of state news will get interested.

No word on the start of these fires.

But the Forest Service out west has been known to do really stupid things.

It was a controlled burn. It was a front page story in the Albuquerque journal about a week ago on a Sunday. I also know that firsthand.

People that sustain damage should sue the gov. ass off. But they probably can’t be sued.

From the National Fire Info Center:

Three new large fires were reported over the weekend, two in Arizona and one in Texas. Currently 12 uncontained large fires have burned 322,309 acres in four states. Ten of these large fires and nearly all of the acres burned are in New Mexico and Arizona. The Hermits Peak and San Rafael fires both displayed extreme fire behavior yesterday. Evacuation orders are in effect.

From another story on the fires:

Otero County residents are calling out the U.S Forest Service, saying the department’s risky behavior could start the next wildfire. The Lincoln National Forest is currently under a Stage 2 Fire Restriction which means welding is not allowed.

Last Thursday forest officials were caught doing just that and residents in Wills Canyon are afraid of what could happen if a spark got out of hand. “These fires are just out of control devastating communities and homes and people’s lives… and also taking people’s lives. Is it really worth the risk,” Landowner Kelly Goss said.

A spokesperson for the Lincoln National Forest says although there are current fire restrictions in place, there are exemptions. In this case, the Forest Service says there is an immediate action to protect an endangered species of jumping mouse, by building a fence.

The Forest Service says there are strict protocols in place ensuring safety, which includes having a fire watch person, water on-site, and only operating certain equipment during non-red flag hours of the day, but even with the protocols, the landowners say welding is still a risk whenever winds are present.

Please note that the National Forest Service is building a metal fence to protect a jumping mouse?

Typical of the government they have one dude welding and a dozen watching him weld - looking for protocol violations.

Makes you wonder who owns all of the equipment being rented by the Forest Service ...

And remember, what one federal official can outlaw for common folk, another can grant an exemption for the feds.

But only with strict supervision.

Of the feds.

Can anyone remember an old Navy term - something like circle ...

Ah well, surely it wouldn't apply here.

After all, these are the good guys!

It’s also where many scenes in the Longmire series were filmed. Also the original “Red Dawn” was filmed there. I lived there as a kid in the 60’s. Heartbreaking to see the Hermit’s Peak fire. Had lots of fun in those mountains and streams growing up.

...... Yup ... I've worked on a number of projects in that area. LV and Santa Fe area is a huge film location site. Beautiful area. Whatever interior shots they can't get there they complete at ABQ Studios in Albuquerque which is one of the finest Studios I have ever worked at. Praying that the fires will spare as much of the area as possible. So sad :-(

Hermit's Peak was a controlled burn. Calf Canyon started west of Hemit's Peak about a week later. It's not normal for fires to spawn new fires to the west of the original, but fires generate their own micro-climate. IIRC, the day Calf Canyon started the winds were actually swirling from the NE, so it could have been spawned by the Hermit's Peak fire. Officially, the Calf Canyon cause is still under investigation.

Sorry, Hermit’s Peak says it started April 6 (we had very strong winds come through on the 5th, so it may have been then it was actually sparked as the controlled burn got out of control). Calf Canyon started the 19th, almost two weeks later.

It is sad. When I go back to LV we stay at the Plaza Hotel on the square in Las Vegas. Wonderful place. Last time was a couple years ago - we stayed in the Tommy Lee Jones suite. ;o)~

My Mom in Maryland has seen reports about it, but she’s always looking for NM news because I’m out here.
