Macron says it will take 'several DECADES' for Ukraine to join the EU and warns Russia must not be 'humiliated' in any peace deal

Emmanuel Macron has warned it could take decades for Ukraine to join the EU as he proposed a new political organisation on the continent.

During a speech marking Europe Day in Strasbourg, the French president said 'we all know perfectly that the process of allowing (Ukraine) to join would take several years, in fact probably several decades.'

He added: 'That is the truth, unless we decide to lower the standards for accession. And rethink the unity of our Europe.'

He also said that Europe must learn from its past mistakes to ensure Russia is not 'humiliated' in peace negotiations.

Interesting but seems a typical French twist.

Another ridiculous statement by Macron. He’s clearly referring to the treaty of Versailles laying the groundwork for World War ii. Nobody is trying to peel away parts of Russia -as France did from Germany -, nor impose draconian and punitive economic sanctions. The only demand, quite literally, is that Russian simply stop invading Ukraine and go back to where they came from.<p

If Russia finds that humiliating because it means they wasted all those lives for nothing, that is their problem. If they want to keep fighting, they can do so.

ensure Russia is not 'humiliated' in peace negotiations

Does barring them from everything and anything for the next 50 years and have them finance the reconstruction of Ukraine qualify as "humiliating" them?

“An abundance of caution.” Timid politicians who rely on charisma would seem to be an oxymoron, but there you are.

Tiptoeing around on eggshells is no way to run a country. Macron is relying on a huge store of diplomatic history and general good-will toward France, that the nation is not reverted to a third or fourth rate power. They are already second-rate.

Macron is 100% correct. Too many unthinking people on this board. When did FR get infiltrated by so many leftists?

Macron is 100% correct.

This might be the only time I've ever agreed with Macron.

Vlad is humiliating himself without a lot of help from anyone else.

But, they need to feel enough “pain” so others don’t do this crap in the future.

Funny we ask the same question about how all these Moscow mouth pieces survive on FR. And then we put our wallets away.

Diplomacy could have avoided this war. Macron warned about the rhetoric by Biden prior to Russia’s invasion.

However, he did propose that any peace treaty be signed at the Palace of Versailles and insisted on reparations.
