Yeah, that must be the reason. I worked with a guy in Atlanta years ago, who was a member at Augusta. He traded his space at the Master's for a prime seat at the Derby.
Ok, soap box on the silly hat thing. For people who couldn’t care less about horses.
I love hats.
But, first this idea that Derby traditionally had big ostentatious hats is warped. They seem to be stuck in the 1900s, and I mean turn of century. That’s when womens hats were often large, but after that it was not the fashion.
Second, wearing big floppy and ostentatious hats is NOT a good look with skimpy little Sun dresses. Again, more than a century ago, the hats fit the DRESS. Women had more clothing so the hats made sense. They just look stupid with skimpy trampy skin-showing dresses. Doesn’t matter the color match, and how tasteful the hat is….it does NOT match the style! Looks stupid.

So, are you named after the popular placing horse Hard Spun? Member of the FLC but was very popular.
I love this race. Such beautiful tradition. The hats of the Southern Belles, strawberries and cream, mint julips, Kentucky hot brown...and of course the race itself which is almost an afterthought.
I’m a woman, and I love hats, though haven’t used them as much for looking good in summer as I did when young. Mine are more conservative but stylish. Like ladies in the ‘40s might wear, which in fact many of them did for Dervpby and all races, because that was the norm for society. It’s not a Derby or racing thing, all people wore them. It’s mistaken to act otherwise!

I'll take Tabia who beat Messier in the SA derby. But with 22 horse field it's anybodies guess as who will win. A good horse can get boxed in and expend too much energy to break out of the pack
My all time favorite horse. Hell of a crop of three year olds that year (Damn Borail!). Never dodged any race, balls to the wall every time out. A real shame he never raced at four.
Taiba is scary talented horse. If the colt breaks clean and Mike Smith negotiates a clean trip, Taiba could very easily win this race. It would be great, oldest jockey to win the Derby on a colt making his third start!
Oddly, favorites don’t win the Derby all that often. Try the second or third favorite.
Hard to believe he is older than The Shoe was.

I have never been to the Derby. It’s on my bucket list. But I’ve been to the Belmont — June 9, 1973.
Secretairat has the stakes record for teh Derby, the stakes record for the Preakness, and hte stakes record for teh Belmont. Beat that!
