...Before the pandemic, in 2018-2019, the number of homeschooled students was about 1,062, almost 700 students less. In the overall scheme of things, the numbers are relatively small. Current district enrollment is about 72,000 students across 108 schools, including charter schools, so homeschooling isn’t approaching anything like an existential threat, at least not yet.
But every time a student leaves the district, it costs BPS thousands of dollars. Next year, every student lost will mean $8,064 less dollars per student for the district. And when students leave, they don’t do so uniformly: some schools can be impacted more than others which shifts the balance in resources.
...
Every student that exits traditional public schools for charter schools, private schools or homeschooling represents a financial loss for Florida school districts.
With the current number of 1,732 students being homeschooled outside of BPS, the district lost about $13.5 million.
As a result, district officials have been forced to make major cuts to the BPS budget to deal with rising costs and increased financial obligations imposed by the state legislature along with the rise in the loss of students to charter schools and homeschooling.
Overall, enrollment in the district actually rose 2% from last school year to this one, a gain of about 1,500 students. That figure includes charter school students, though, and BPS won't receive funding for those students.
...
According to BPS School Board Chair Misty Belford, when a student leaves the district, BPS often can’t decrease its budget proportionally; it can’t cut the money it spends to heat and cool the buildings; BPS can’t drop a bus route, and it can’t remove a teacher from the staff.(emphasis added)

If it matters that much to them, they should consider being less hostile to parents.
There is no “education quality” in a Marxist DemocRAT America. “Education” these days is all about the student’s gonads and that’s about it.
They have the cause and effect backwards.
Good.
This is silly.....Brevard has always had a healthy number of home schoolers...but it also has the leadership to keep most ‘non homeschooling students’ in school without resorting to Draconian measures.
....maybe they should track some ‘blue state schools’ and see how many MORE children are home schooling now.
Ft. Drum youth center worker arrested had thousands of images of child porn, police say
Fort Drum youth center employee arrested for sexual abuse, had 10,000 images, troopers say
Yeah, because the top students will be leaving.
Good.
In most businesses, the greatest variable cost is labor.
The extent that public education is a three-card Monte game is encapsulated in the bolded sentence.
The biggest threat to education quality is the Teacher’s Unions. This is a very well established fact.
We can stop prioritizing the comfort of adults, over the safety of children. Why do school employees sexually abuse students? Because they CAN.
We homeschooled both daughters up to high school, where their dad was a teacher. We were never compensated by the state for the expense of homeschooling materials or offered a rebate in our tax bill for services unused.
I don’t have kids and I pay school taxes.
Typical Yahoo quality.
Public school quality is right down there with Biden quality.
This is why home schooling is doing well.
I’ll pick a home schooled child over an NEA trained idiot any day.
In GA schools are funded via property taxes. Our county gives old codgers like us a break but others don’t.
Defund the bloated, inefficient, perverted, useless administrators, undesired social influencing school teachers, and teachers unions.
Start our own private non-governmental school districts.
I guess the architects of our governmental schools never thought the mental part would become more important than the govern part.
Education quality is code for unaffordable pensions and cadillac health bennies.
That’s where most of a school budget goes.
Gotcha, thanks.
There’s a real incentive to homeschool at least since schools began “values clarification” programs. CRT and the pandemic just accelerated the trend. Government schools here in the US have always promoted civic values and the work ethic in their lessons but then they moved on to inculcate sexual and political values as well, all while stumbling on basic education areas like math and literacy. Now they are making serious inroads on promoting scientific and historical fantasy as fact as they work to standardize all this miseducation. Homeschooling is a defensive move for many.
