Why the Ukrainian war is also a domestic political issue for Biden
The Guardian via Yahoo ^ | May 5th, 2022 | Julian Borger in Washington

The visit of the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to Kyiv at the head of a congressional delegation this week was a reminder that in Washington the Ukraine war is not just an issue of national security but is an increasingly important domestic political issue too.

In his approach to the conflict, Joe Biden, has the wind at his back in terms of US public opinion and Democratic party sentiment which is encouraging him to be ever more forward-leaning.

In a new poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News, 37% of Americans questioned said his administration was not doing enough to support the Ukrainians, fractionally more than the 36% who said he was doing the right amount. Only 14% suggested he was doing too much.

Late last month, the administration broadened US objectives in the conflict, to not just support Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity but also to weaken Russia, with the aim of preventing a repeat of Moscow’s aggression against other countries.

A European diplomat suggested that one of the factors behind that shift was impatience in the higher levels of the party with the administration’s posture.

The neocons and Democrats (did I repeat myself?) are united in their support for Ukraine and believe their "moral war" will lead to victories in the mid-terms.

They are also united in saying food and energy inflation in the US is "worth it" to wage economic war against Russia, and that nobody should concern themselves with what's happening on the southern border.

As we continue to deplete our defense stocks, China is happy as a clam.

He’s raping America to buy off Ukraine. Let the EU take care of Ukraine. We have no interest.

It’s to cover for the years of corruption, graft and money laundering that our “elite politicians” have been doing there for years. They cannot afford to let the truth come out to the “unwashed masses”. They’re like piglets sucking on a sow at public expense.

I still can't understand why Russia had to be turned into an enemy. They complained, but did nothing while NATO expanded from 12 to 30 nations and overthrew governments on their border. Ukraine, and the West, would be a lot stronger if Ukraine had been declared neutral, like Austria. It could have developed its own identity and developed peacefully. It would have grown in its use of the US Dollar (and rubles) and been a bridge between west and east.

Now that is destroyed

Uh, uh. Can’t have EU step in. For Bidens, Kerry’s, etc; Uk is their source of money laundering — if not directly, thru their relatives. If this is turned over to others, they lose $$.

That is all this is about, from the very beginning. $$ for elites. Special privileges for elites. Yada, yada.

Biden normally would be strangled by his own "I won't do anything if they just take a little bit" comment, and his other foreign policy disasters. The only way this could help the Democrats politically is if Republicans take positions that are not consistent with the sentiments of the American people to support Ukraine.

So to the extent it helps Biden, it's a self-inflicted wound.

NATO expansion is an issue, but not “the” reason Russia invaded, in my opinion.
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuainia and Poland are all NATO countries, but Russia did not invade.
I believe the huge natural gas and oil reserves discovered in Donbas and to the west are the main reason for the invasion.
If Ukraine developed these fields, which they would and sell to Europe, it would end Russia’s monopoly on selling energy to Europe and this would devastate Russia’s already shaky economy.

Just my two cents.

Biden has the wind at his back; what Bullsh*t. Biden has so screwed this up that he practically has to turn this into another Vietnam.

He has already said at least twice that he is sending American troops into the Ukraine and his staff said he didn't mean it both times. But I think he thinks becoming a war time president will get him out of his horrible poll numbers and his pathetic party with him.

But after Covid, the huge loss of jobs, the Arsoned-Looted-Roited to death Democratic cities, Firing the unvaccinated, Inflation out the whazoo, and soaring energy prices (due to his edicts) the American People have had it.

And quite frankly, IMHO, the vast majority of Americans don't want troops and direct involvement in Ukraine as it would lead to another Vietnam (with Russia on the other side).

“The only way this could help the Democrats politically is if Republicans take positions that are not consistent with the sentiments of the American people to support Ukraine.”

That depends on whether the Dims and neocons can keep up the ruse through the first week in November...as inflation rages.

By far the majority of Americans are simply emoting as directed by media. I don’t believe it will continue as real impacts become...real.

Well, I think you may be disappointed in your belief that everyone who supports Ukraine is simply "emoting", and will change their views by November. I know an awful lot of Republicans who were on Ukraine's side before the war even started, before the propaganda, based simply on a dislike of Russian military aggression. That isn't going to change.

I actually think GOP primary winners who oppose aid to Ukraine are going to get hammered successfully on that very issue come the general election.

I didn’t say all. You did.

My contention is that it will be a majority.

And I will do my best to bring them around.
