May Putin’s exit from the ranks of the living be most painful.

They can’t even take half the country, and you think they’re going to take all Eastern Europe? Oh, please…

Russia wasn't able to take half of Ukraine because…
…of the brave Ukrainian fighters (yeah, some of them may be a-holes)…
…backed by the western (read: US) support…
…which you quite clearly oppose.

When you show to a thread an hour late, you should read all the responses so you are not regurgitating a point already clarified.

I'm in partial agreement with you here.

1. We did make "security assurances" to Ukraine in that 1994 Budapest Memorandum to get them to give up their nukes. (Which was probably stupid in hindsight.)

The help we've given them up to this point I think fulfills our obligation - the U.S. gave our word, and we came through in helping Ukraine through a couple months of invasion.

2. Putin has outright said - as recently as the night before this ridiculous war - that he wants to re-establish the USSR. It is in American citizens' interests to make sure that doesn't happen.

But that second point goes for Europe 10X more that it goes for the USA. Those laggards in Europe need to wake up and start fulfilling their basic security obligations to their citizens, rather than making ours responsible.

“We” didn’t, Bill Clinton did. That’s why it’s a memo and not a treaty.
But as you said, we have fulfilled the obligation anyhow.

There’s what Putin wants, and what Putin can do. They are mostly exclusive.
Russia is weaker and NATO is strong. There won’t be a new empire.
Russia’s demographics are poor. 1.5 births, replacement is 2.1…

We are in agreement about Europe fulfilling their duties.

If Russia takes Mariupol and Odessa they will control about 75% of the worlds production of Industrial NEON with China controlling most of the rest. Industrial NEON is required for laser etching microchips. It is very difficult to refine and a start up plant would take about a year to get up and running if you could even get a reliable source for harvesting the neon. Having Russia and China basically control the world’s production of microchips IS our problem.

So you want us to go to war, the two biggest nuclear powers, over a semiconductor chip shortage?
Should we include China and Iran as well?
Industrial neon is worth nothing if Russia can’t sell it.
Maybe we should work to end the war instead of perpetuating it
with more money and weaponry.
And maybe we should bring manufacturing back to the US.

Russian Telegram account says

The extraordinary unconfirmed claims come from General SVR Telegram channel, which first raised issues of Putin’s health - including abdominal cancer and Parkinson’s - some 18 months ago.

https://then24.com/2022/02/16/political-scientist-nightingale-detained-in-moscow/

Detention of Nightingale may be related to the Ukrainian Telegram channel

The detention may be related to the cooperation of the political scientist and the General SVR Telegram channel, which, according to REN-TV, could have connections with Ukrainian and Western intelligence services.

It is noted that Nightingale regularly speaks live with the channel’s administrator, a certain Viktor Mikhailovich, who is allegedly a former general of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia. According to the channel, in fact, this pseudonym is used by Ukrainian lawyer Viktor Ermolaev.

"The criminal case may be related to the cooperation of Nightingale with the Telegram channel, which is administered by a certain Ermolaev from Ukraine. Law enforcement officers became interested in the activities of this person last year," the source said.

Searches at the political scientist Nightingale were carried out in the case of inciting hatred or enmity

[excerpt]

According to the investigation, Nightingale made publications in the anonymous Telegram channel General SVR.

According to the source, the administration of this resource is carried out from the territory of Ukraine by Viktor Ermolaev, a resident of Kharkov.

The source also said that Nightingale conducts regular streams with Ermolaev.

It’s like no one bothers to check who’s making the claims, so long as they’re making the ‘right’ claims for the ‘right’ side.

Another case in point: https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4059543/posts

PJ Media’s headline: “Russia Threatens to Nuke Britain, France, and Germany”

Their source? The words of the chairman of a fair-right, anti-communist minority party (Rodina) from a television interview. Rodina, it must be said, currently has only 1 representative in the Duma (out of 450 total) and holds less than 0.20% of the seats of *all* the provincial parliaments throughout the Russian Federation. Yet this yahoo’s words are supposedly representing the ‘official’ position of Russia, per PJ Media.

It would be akin to hearing Jim Clymer (the chairman of the Constitution Party) talking on television and concluding that his words somehow represent official U.S. government policy.

An 'assurance' isn't the same thing as an 'obligation', for what it's worth. The only thing the Memorandum (not even a treaty) indicates the parties would do in the event of aggression against Ukraine was to consult the UN Security Council, which has indeed been done.

That is the greatest revelation of this war, the fundamental weakness of Russia.
The second greatest is just how vicious Putins government is likely to be in exploiting what they perceive as their opponents weaknesses.
The third is the extent of Russian ambitions, which creates an inherent hostility towards all its neighbors.
The fourth is the fatuity of European energy policy. This seems to be getting addressed to various degrees.

When Pooty Poot croaks in the next few months he should get the Rooskie version of a Viking funeral. Fire him off into the cosmos on a one megaton hypersonic missile.
