KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of trying to destroy the Donbas and all who live there.
“The constant brutal bombardments, the constant Russian strikes on infrastructure and residential areas show that Russia wants to empty this territory of all people. Therefore, the defence of our land, the defence of our people, is literally a fight for life,” he said late Friday in his nightly video address to the nation.

There’s hasn’t been a whole lot of America conquering nations and then keeping their territory in the last 100+ years.
And for all that matter, the places we did take and keep are better off now for us having come — which can’t be said for the Russians.
I think I agree with your sentiment, and I think I see the sarcasm in your original post better now.
As to backyards, I can see the argument from the other side that Ukraine is Russia’s ‘backyard’. However 70 years of the USSR, there are many former backyards of Russia that are now free of the former oppression and will not go back. Likewise, Western Europe, if it’s smart, will remember the lessons of WWII and the lead up to that, and collectively never let that kind of evil go unchecked again. Russia’s backyards are the equivalent of abused children who are now free adults and don’t want or need the abusive parent anymore. Even if some of those children are problem children.
As for Western Europe being less evil than Russia? Maybe, But not by much. The main difference being that Euro-authoritarianism comes with a smiley face sticker on it.

It is clear Vlad will take the Eastern Donbass provinces. They declared their Independence from Ukraine back in 2015. The little beggar Zelensky never wanted the Donbass, full of those “ evil ethnic Russians “.
Fact is those Donbass ethnic Russians were tired of Ukraine’s legendary corruption, money laundering, bribes.
It appears now that when the Ukie’s Donbass pocket collapses, they have no choice but to retreat back to the Dniepner river. There will be no “ epic tank battle” on the Ukie flat plains, they have very few tanks left, no fuel ( Vlad cut off the Ukies major fuel supply from Romania a few days ago), ravaged supply lines, little support vehicles left.
Zelensky will finally have to start negotiating, he will “ give” the troublesome Russian Donbass their Independence, then rebuild his flattened country for a decade ( with taxpayers money- ten percent to Joe).
