Opinion: McCarthy and McConnell's U-turn on Trump shows extent of GOP's partisan rot
cnn ^ | April 22, 2022 | Julian E. Zelizer

That Donald Trump acknowledged some responsibility for the January 6 insurrection, according to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, pulls back the curtain on a former president who has publicly downplayed actions of his supporters at the US Capitol that day and shown little remorse for pushing the lie that the 2020 election was "stolen."

Republican leaders McCarthy and Mitch McConnell were privately angry with Trump in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection -- only to publicly gloss over the incident in following weeks.

According to audio recordings obtained by two New York Times reporters, McCarthy . . .

Similarly, McConnell predicted Republicans would break from Trump . . .

Both McCarthy and McConnell, of course, voted to acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection when Trump was impeached for the second time.

This refusal to hold Trump accountable reveals how far most of the Republican Party has shifted in recent decades. Even a full-scale attack on a presidential election, coupled with a violent attack on Congress, is not enough to break the rank partisanship. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida falsely claimed members of Antifa were to blame. . .

The Republican Party has made investigations into January 6 extraordinarily difficult. . .

The new heroes of the party include Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is currently the focus of a legal hearing which could disqualify her from running for reelection. The suit was launched by several of her constituents, with the backing of constitutional scholars and liberal activists

It is notable the Kennedy Foundation is giving its "profile in courage" award to Cheney, along with Ukrainian President Zelensky. As much as the award acknowledges the courage Cheney has shown, it is also a reminder of how far the GOP has fallen when it comes to partisanship.

Julian Zelizer, professor at Princeton University:

“How politicians deal with January 6 should be a litmus test for voters to think about the fundamental values of each political party. The attack against Congress, and our election system, was not simply another event — it was a defining moment for our democracy.”

The election was stolen. Not a lie. The big steal. Everyone with more than two brain cells knows this whether they admitted it out loud or not.

From CNN, which lost 90% of their key demographics (per the Nielsen datings) in the last year due to fake news...

CNN is right, there is partisan rot in the GOP. Much of it will be removed in the primaries.

well...I don't know about what was going through these guys' heads specifically before and after, but human nature is that once the heat of the moment passes you reflect on what actually happened and what the real, if any, consequences were when you are calmed more down. In the 'immediate aftermath', they had just been swept into full lockdown by security.

CNN can be counted on giving you a good laugh since they no longer worry about reporting the news.

Ignoring the evidence isn’t helping them. These are the people who for years denied to us with a straight face that there was no political bias in the MSM. They can’t just deny it away. A lot of people think there was something not right about the 2020 election. A lot of people. It was suspicious. Starting each news article with “Without evidence” and calling people’s doubts “false claims” is not helping - it’s not going away. It’s making it worse. It’s leaving it to fester. That’s why they’re going to get their asses kicked in the mid-terms and probably 2024.

I think we need to update, "The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers," to "kill all the professors."

What a tool, this Princeton "professor"

These two clowns are just a couple of third class politicians who are on the take from the Chinese, especially McConnell. Mitch doesn’t want to jeopardize his wife’s interest in the Chinese Shipping Co. based in China. Big Bucks. He is selling out the Republican Party for his own benefit along with McCarthy. They are both out to get President Trump which is becoming obvious lately......Replace the entire leadership of the Party to save it.

Agreed. Don’t post the garbage. It’s BS,
I watched Trump on the Mall giving a wonderful
peaceful speech where he told the crowd not
to get sucked into anything other than Ghandi and
MLK type peaceful protest march.

Trump appealed to our wiser better angels with
true leadership and wisdom.

We have not just Rot in GOP but Bill Barr, the FBI
the SCOTUS which wouldn’t take the casese with
massive evidence to a hearing because Dems threatened with
court packing.

Sad for us lovers of democracy.

Trump won in court again today. CYRUS Vance’s
attempt to railroad Trump failed.
