The change would represent a significant departure from Japan’s post-World War II constitution which renounced war and allows for only a limited measure of “defensive” capabilities.
Japan is considering modifying its constitution to enable “enemy base strike capabilities,” new language which would expand the country’s ability to conduct military attacks into a wider range of contingencies. The change would represent a significant departure from Japan’s post-World War II constitution which renounced war and allowed for only a limited measure of “defensive” capabilities.
Japanese society and security alike have significantly changed since then. For example, in light of the growing threat of Chinese military expansion, Japan’s military, which has called itself the Japan Self-Defense Forces since 1954, is now adapting to a new international security environment. Indeed, after Germany announced that it would increase its defense spending in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi told the country’s Kyodo News service “our country must think about a similar move as well.” Kishi reportedly spoke at length about the need to increase Japan’s defense capabilities “swiftly” due to the threat environment and ensure that potential adversaries “pay a price” for aggression.

The fact is that the best defence for a massively populated and crowded nation is offense. Take the war to the enemey and keep it away from the homeland.
This should be done, and done as quickly and as publicly as possible.
And then allow Japan to have its own nuclear capability. And make than VERY public.
Make any potential invasion of Japan look so costly that no one will EVER attempt it.
Lived there for 14 years and all I can is just don’t consider it but do it!
I just can’t get a vision of Japan having nuclear weapons and then not using them on us for revenge. But it’s just the old memories of WW2. I have Japanese and Japanese American in laws so it’s a new world.
They have all the material to make the bombs, all they need is an overwhelming reason to do it.
The buildup to WW IV continues......
Not certain a nuclear Japan is something I would welcome, but on the other hand, I bet it is Xi’s worst nightmare.
The American ability to deter the Chinese is lessened everyday. With the new Eastern European Cold War and the massive new arms race we can no longer afford our commitments in Asia (Biden just asked for an additional $33B, enough to build three aircraft carriers to be pi$$ed away in Ukraine). The Japanese and South Koreans need an independent nuclear retaliatory capability ASAP. A Japanese nuclear deterrent, with a Japanese finger on the button should be Japan’s number one priority.
FUKUSHIMA YEAH!!!!
Make any potential invasion of Japan look so costly that no one will EVER attempt it.
***As it stands now, China could invade and it would probably end up stalemated in the middle of Japan somewhere. American backed Japanese on one side, Chinese conquered Japanese on the other. Eventually the Japanese on both sides will see more common ground with Chinese than the round eyes, much like what happened in Vietnam. For instance, their written language is very similar to each other.
Lived in Japan 3 years and taught english at an Aviation high school. (日本航空高等学校 山梨キャンパス)

Definitely a slice of society willing to step up.
It probably won’t matter, their economy is dying.
I’d just threaten China with Godzilla, Mothra and Rhodan.
I lived there 21 years.. and I agree.

Very thought-provoking statement.
Makes you wonder how much people were reading into the events of the mid/late 1930s. Of course you had a lot of pacifist and denial-ist leaders at the time, but there were plenty going on that should have been very hard to ignore, including what Japan was doing in China and the more than obvious smoke signals coming out of the nazi’s in germany.
I can’t blame Japan for being worried. One would like to assume that both Japan and S.Korea would not be allying with China, but that all depends on how aggressive China gets with them and whether they capitulate to it or resist.
I hate to say it, but I don’t think Japan necessarily needs full military industrialization as long as they have a genuine nuclear deterrent. The only problem with using M.A.D. as a defense for them is their geographic disadvantage. A country as big as China, if crazy enough, might just decide they can accept their losses because Japan can’t.
Agreed Kevmo!
My son lives there and is the head of an English Language Academy. He married a lovely Japanese lady and they have 3 children.
You bet they should do it IMHO. And soon!
I don't agree with that. I've been over there and been immersed enough. If snowflakes think racism is the major thing in the US, what I've seen/heard over there is an eye opener, especially in how the Chinese and Japanese view each other (there is a bit of history there neither side has forgotten).
Heck, even inside China, you have a certain disdain similar to what you get in the US--for example, a native from Shanghai referring to Beijing as a bunch of farmers (think NYC native referring to Southerners), or a Beijing native telling me a joke about how Chinese in Guangzhou will eat anything except the table.
Nah, it wouldn't play out they way you think.
Japan has been in a recession for 30 years. They have pumped massive amounts of money into their economy while piling up debt.
But Japan owns more US debt than anyone. Last year, the Federal Reserve bought trillions in bond that Japan held so Japan could go on a $7 trillion spending spree to prop up its failing economy.
The world banks are spending like crazy and pumping money into the market at record levels.
The world will need a war to avoid or recover from the coming crash.
