WASHINGTON (AP) — Citing growing worries about high gasoline prices, Democratic leaders announced an effort Thursday to give the Federal Trade Commission increased authority to crack down on companies that engage in price gouging.
In doing so, they downplayed the possibility of other options such as a federal gas tax holiday or offering oil companies more government incentives to increase production. Instead, they said the FTC needs more tools, including stiffer fines and penalties and a team of dedicated experts to monitor markets and go after price gouging.
With voters concerned about the growing toll of inflation, Democrats again signaled their intention going into November’s midterm elections to place much of the blame for high gas prices on oil companies. Democrats accused oil companies of “ripping off the American people” at a contentious hearing this month with oil industry executives.
“Congress must do more to beef up the FTC’s ability to crack down on potential gas price manipulation and price gouging,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Thursday. When the Democratic bills reach the House and Senate floor, “Republicans will face a dilemma: Which side are they on? On the consumer and lowering gas prices? Or on the side of the big oil?” Schumer said.
A draft description of the legislation says it would double the maximum penalty for manipulating wholesale oil markets to up to $2 million a day for each violation.

but their voter-base is clueless, like children, so it works
Gas stations make very little money off gas sales. It’s everything inside the store they make money on. And the supply chain is reacting to the normal supply and demand, as well as what’s happening in the futures market.
And quit tapping our emergency reserve, Brandon! This situation isn’t what it was established for.
Welcome back Carter!
Defeat in Vietnam Afghanistan! Stagflation! Invasion from the Soviets Russians! Soaring gas prices! Gas shortages!
Is there any end to the talents of Democrat governance?
“Republicans will face a dilemma”
That’s all this is about. Trying to reframe the disastrous gas prices as “Republicans’ fault” instead of it being the result of Joe Biden and the Democrats’ failed policies.
There's the real goal. To continue padding Deep State's payrolls...
From 1963...
The jokes just write themselves.
Here is the #1 Price Gouger:
Are they going to start with the Price-Gouger-in-Chief, Joe Biden????????
Oh Hire more libs and commies into the federal government. Yeah that’s the ticket!
But not government gouging.
Taxes are patriotic!
After all, price controls worked so well last time...
So now they weaponize the FTC and go after the corner gas stations. If you think you can’t hate the rats any more think again.
Here is question that I always ask. How much does the taxpayer have to pay continually to combat price gouging? I mean, there was a story about some state that was coming down on hardware stores selling generators at double price after a hurricane (or something). So, people who had not prepared and bought a generator in the months and years before the natural disaster were facing “price gouging” and the state was bringing the full force of its power against the retailers. But what was the continual cost of this protection? The people tasked in the consumer protection agency and the attorney general’s office - the myriad of bureaucrats and regulators - how much did THAT cost? So a few people get spared paying an extra $500 on a generator. But, the cost of these “watchdogs” has to be paid by someone. When can we say that government is “gouging” you?
The democrat solution: blame others and censor those who blame the democrats.
Instead of offering good and real solutions to the problems, democrats always come up with ideas which make the problems worse.
Republicans will point out how closing off pipelines and drilling has put Americans at risk and enriched Iran and Venezuela! Republicans need to get ahead of this NOW!
Next is pure price controls…gas will be $1.15 per gallon…catch is no gas will be available other than 1 gallon every other Tuesday…
