WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government on Thursday released its long-awaited plan to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, citing the toll on Black smokers and young people.
“The proposed rules would help prevent children from becoming the next generation of smokers and help adult smokers quit,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, in a statement.
He added that the ban would also be an “important step to advance health equity” by reducing disparities in tobacco-related diseases.
The Food and Drug Administration said eliminating menthol cigarettes could prevent between 300,000 and 650,000 smoking deaths over 40 years.
Menthol accounts for more than a third of cigarettes sold in the U.S, and the mint flavor is favored by Black smokers and young people. Menthol’s cooling effect has been shown to mask the throat harshness of smoking, making it easier to start and harder to quit.
The FDA said it will also seek to ban menthol and dozens of other flavors like grape and strawberry from cigars, which are increasingly popular with young people, especially Black teens.

Where there is demand there will be supply. it will just move to the black market, like reefer.
And the gubment will loose all those tax dollars. And I mean billions.
Really?
Yep. Ever notice the Democrats are always passing more laws to restrict the freedoms of Americans? Why is it that they never, ever pass legislation, or executive orders to expand the right of Americans? Always more laws that tighten the noose while adding more pressure of the government's heavy boot to the back of people's necks.
That’s what comes from electing the village idiots to public office.
What, are you counting my nomsayins? You taking a nomcensus?
Shortly after the birth of my second child, I got wise and quit (almost) cold turkey. Oh, I had an occasional smoke on Thursday nights when I bowled, but that was it. My cravings would arise on occasion, but it wasn't long before I completely stopped.
I still enjoyed smoking, I guess I finally wised up.
Always son, ya feel me dog?…
This is DEFINITELY racist! Everyone knows what demographic favors menthol flavored tobacco.
EXCELLENT
Any black person who votes for a Democrat, after this, is a confirmed idiot.
Don' worry Mistah Biden! Fo' every
REAL black vote we lose, we just print out
TWO fraud ballots!
Not many people do nowadays.
Doesn’t matter. That Aunt-Jemimah-lookin’, fraud-vote-creating, gap-toothed, overweight Ghettopotamus SHOULD talk like that.
Wait! What's THAT supposed to mean??
jest kidding.
Menthol is actually added to all cigarettes in small amounts to improve the taste. This law is really just a difference in degree and not in kind. If they think this is such a great idea, why not have a law that requires the manufacturers to put in additives that make smoking even more unpleasant and irritating? Why stop with cigarettes? Maybe they should make certain cheap alcohol products favored by homeless people taste disgusting to cure them of alcoholism. Do they really think people are so stupid?
YUGE brand new market for menthol cigs manufactured on injun reservations ... then purchased in bulk by re-sellers who in turn transport and sell blackmarket menthols on street corners in the hoods ... pretty soon, it’ll be taken over by organized gangs, driving out the original “entrepreneurs”, which in turn will spark vicious gang wars fought over territories ... gee, seems like we’ve heard about this happening before ...
“It smelled so nasty to a non smoker.”
Even as a smoker I can’t stand them. I used to have to bum one occasionally from the black guys at school. It was like smoking toothpaste.
Yes. There have been a couple of them in the area. The other one I’ve seen more often is a Twix candy bar Donk.
How about banning Tobacco?
It is in fact racist and it will not happen.
