I remember reading three or four decades ago that Senators make the worst presidents because, in the Senate, they are one of a hundred, it’s easy to hide, and that does not build executive skills or character.
That’s precisely why President Trump was so successful against such staggering odds and why they had to destroy him.

Agreed. Barring their pre-office experience, senators have very little, if any executive experience. Some have been governors or CEOs of large organizations, and in those cases are probably as prepared as anybody can be (except possibly a VP), but senate experience in and of itself, is relatively meaningless in terms of becoming POTUS.
That said, it should not be an issue decided by George Will.

That’s precisely why President Trump was so successful against such staggering odds and why they had to destroy him. Well, to be fair, Trump wasn't the exception in that regard. The last Republican President to have served in the Senate was Nixon (who they tried and succeeded in destroying), and the only other Republican to have been a Senator was Warren G. Harding.

That's why in the last sixty-some years only two have gone directly from The Senate to the White House: John Kennedy and obama.
