Banning Russia, Banning Russians

Should Russian culture should be banned or canceled to punish Russia and Vladimir Putin for their aggression against Ukraine?

Dramatically, in March 2022, the Metropolitan Opera in New York decided to cut ties with all artists who were regarded as "pro-Putin." As a consequence, Met general manager Peter Gelb dropped from the cast the magnetic soprano, Anna Netrebko, whom he describes as one of the greatest singers in Met history. There was, he said, no way forward, because Netrebko had not renounced her support of Putin.

In response, Netrebko replied that she was opposed to "this war[.] I am Russian and I love my country[.] [However, f]orcing artists or any public figure to voice their opinions in public and denounce their homeland is not right. I am not a member of any political party, nor an expert in politics."

The canceling and boycotting of individuals connected in some way with Russia raise troubling issues. The case of this gifted soprano is only one of a number in the stampede to ban those individuals and organizations connected with Russia. One can understand the animus toward Valery Gergiev, general director of the Malinsky Theater and artistic director of the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, who is a known friend and supporter of Putin and who has not distanced himself from the Ukraine aggression. He has been asked to resign from various positions in Europe and U.S. as conductor or director. The same is true of Anatoly Karpov, former world chess champion, who became a member of the Russian parliament.

If I had to ban anything, the thing I would ban would be banning things. Cancel culture is double-plus ungood.

Before WWI if you wanted to publish a technical article, it had to be in French or German. After WWI German was banned. The two languages became English and French. Then, after WWII nobody from France was publishing anything and it became just English.

And, while it’s true other languages were used, like Russian for math, whatever they published wasn’t available to or likely to be read at colleges in the West. If you wanted a Nobel Prize you had to publish in English.

As an aside, because America is so big it was rare for Americans to learn a second language. When I started college in 1972 they had just done away with the second language requirement because so few Americans were willing to learn a second language they’d never have a chance to use. Prior to that, you weren’t considered educated unless you spoke a second language and for the sophisticated that language was French.

It’s complete garbage. Wimbledon won’t let anyone from Russia play in the tournament this year. Because a 20 y/o girl that probably lives in Miami or Monte Carlo is somehow responsible for Vladimir Putin’s actions…
It reminds me of those retards pouring out vodka. It’s stupid, and it was already paid for. FReepers that threw out their already purchased Gillette razors were equally retarded.

What are they going to do next, discriminate against Americans who have Russian-sounding names? Like they did to Americans with German-sounding names during WWI?

Its the childish response of political sheep.

One sees something like the mass insanity of China’s Cultural Revolution, and think “oh, that can’t happen here.”

Put enough power in the hands of centralized government - and it will definitely happen here in the good old USA.
