Gazprom to Stop Gas Supplies to Bulgaria From April 27 - Media Citing Ministry

Russia decided to make "unfriendly nations" pay for its gas in rubles after the Western countries and their allies imposed harsh sanctions on Moscow over its military operation in Ukraine.

Gazprom, major Russian gas company, is to suspend supplies to Bulgaria starting from April 27, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Tuesday, citing a statement from the Bulgarian economy ministry. The ministry announced that the country’s state-owned company Bulgargaz and the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) assessed the possibility of implementing the new two-stage payment procedure proposed by the Russian government and said it “does not comply with the contract valid until the end of the year and carries significant risks for the Bulgarian side, including making payments without receiving gas from the Russian side.”

"Bulgargaz received a notification today, April 26, that natural gas supplies from Gazprom Export will be suspended starting April 27," the ministry reportedly said.

It also claimed that "the Bulgarian side has fully met its obligations and has made all payments required under its current contract in a timely manner, strictly and in accordance with its terms."

According to the statement, the ministry, BEH, Bulgargaz and Bulgartransgaz, the country’s gas transmission and storage system operator, have taken action on alternative agreements on gas supply. So far, there have been no restrictions on gas consumption announced in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian government spokesperson Lena Borislavova said earlier that the government would not allow violations of existing gas supply contracts, which presuppose payments in dollars or euros. She noted that the cessation of gas supplies from Russia is unlikely to affect the country, as it receives gas from various suppliers, including Azerbaijan.

Never trust the Russians. As Otto von Bismarck so eloquently said: “I don’t trust the Russians because the Russians don’t trust themselves.”

You want something you’ve got to pay for it. It would be Pretty silly to expect Russia to accept payments in a currency you are banning them from using.

If Russia continued the current contract, they would be giving away their gas for FREE.

Russia does not have access to US dollar payments made to non-Russian banks. This is because of US seizing Russian US dollar reserves and freezing western bank accounts.

So it is not surprising that Russia decides not to give away huge supplies of gas for free.

Yup.
You pretty much covered it.
Bulgaria is STUPID for expecting the Russians to effectively give them natural gas for free.

Bulgarians had to live through the Cold War when everything was scarce, so no-doubt taking cold showers and freezing to death next winter cannot be a big deal to them.

What does the contract stipulate? Follow the terms and conditions of the contract.

So, argue force majeure and negotiate a new contract.

Never trust anyone, but in this case, Russia was GLAD to supply gas (at least as long as Putin is in charge), but Poland and Bulgaria decided they didn’t want to pay for it, given the available means to transfer money, at this point.

Europe got entangled with a nation they never should have
trusted. Trump tried to warn them. They knew better. Why
he was just a narcissist.

Well guys, I hope you enjoyed your few moments of laughter
looking back, as your fellow citizens go through extreme
hardship soon.

Why? Nobody is going to supply a thing for free.

Poland and Bulgaria complied with the terms and conditions of the contract. THEY didn’t apply the monetary sanctions against Russia.

Exactly what I thought. Why accept Euros if you aren’t allowed to trade them for Rubles or use them abroad. Russia would be giving gas away.
