COVID Variant Proportions

Monitoring Variant Proportions

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is constantly changing and accumulating mutations in its genetic code over time. New variants of SARS-CoV-2 are expected to continue to emerge. Some variants will emerge and disappear, while others will emerge and continue to spread and may replace previous variants.

To identify and track SARS-CoV-2 variants, CDC uses genomic surveillance. CDC's national genomic surveillance system collects SARS-CoV-2 specimens for sequencing through the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance (NS3) program, as well as SARS-CoV-2 sequences generated by commercial or academic laboratories contracted by CDC and state or local public health laboratories. Virus genetic sequences are analyzed and classified as a particular variant. The proportion of variants in a population are calculated nationally, by HHS region, and by jurisdiction. The thousands of sequences analyzed every week through CDC’s national genomic sequencing and bioinformatics efforts fuel the comprehensive and population-based U.S. surveillance system established to identify and monitor the spread of variants.

Rapid virus genomic sequencing data combined with phenotypic data are further used to determine whether COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines authorized or approved for use in the United States will work against emerging variants.

The original Omicron variant (BA 1.1 and its sub variants) was what drove the Delta variant into practical extinction. Now that original Omicron variant is, in turn, being outcompeted and rapidly driven into extinction by the new BA 2 variant and its sub variants which now constitute 96.8% of current new cases. As FReeper BeauBo and others have pointed out, each new variant has seemed to be more infectious but less virulent.

Finally tested negative yesterday. Still got a nasty cough but from what I read it should be worth a six month immunity.

They have “variants” planned out until 2023. It’s all BS.

“Like the flu does every year ?”

Except variant replacements more frequently than the flu. It’s endemic now and we can live with it.

” each new variant has seemed to be more infectious but less virulent.”

This is usually what happens with most viruses though out history.

From what I’ve been reading about the BA 1.1 variant many cases are pretty much asymptomatic. (Thought I read Kackala tested positive but she is asymptomatic)

Why do you leave out the actual results and post only the boring pre-amble?

It’s a government web site. There are no copyright or excerpting issues.

As for the content, yes, Covid is over. It was always a hype and there’s no denying now it’s just another respiratory illness like flu or cold (many colds are coronaviruses). It can be more dangerous for certain at risk groups, as are colds and flu.

It’s over.

At least 58% of U.S. population has natural antibodies from previous Covid infection, CDC says!

PUBLISHED TUE, APR 26 2022 1:00 PM EDT UPDATED 54 MIN AGO

Three out of every five people in the U.S. now have antibodies from a previous Covid-19 infection, according to a new CDC analysis.

The proportion even higher among children, demonstrating how widespread the virus was during the winter omicron surge.

CDC officials told reporters on a call Tuesday that the study did not measure whether people with prior infections had high enough antibody levels to protect against reinfection and severe illness.

However, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said health officials believe there is a lot of protection against the virus in communities from vaccination, boosting and infection taken together.

Three out of every five people in the U.S. now have antibodies from a previous Covid-19 infection with the proportion even higher among children, demonstrating how widespread the virus was during the winter omicron surge, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The proportion of people with natural Covid antibodies increased substantially from about 34% of the population in December to about 58% in February during the unprecedent wave of infection driven by the highly contagious omicron variant. The CDC’s analysis didn’t factor in people who had antibodies from vaccination.

The CDC published the data in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Tuesday.

The increase in antibody prevalence was most pronounced among children, indicating a high rate of infection among kids during the winter omicron wave. About 75% of children and teenagers now have antibodies from past Covid infections, up from abut 45% in December.

Nope. Studies show people originally diagnosed with covid in the beginning still have antibodies.

We’ve heard that people have had Covid more than once.

I don’t believe this. I suspect they had Covid once and the flu the other time.

The inventor of the PCR test said the test doesn’t differentiate Covid from the flu. Basically, justs picks up virus fragments and if cycled too many times will pick up last year’s cold virus fragments and be positive.

The year before Covid we had 34,000,000 flu cases. The first year of Covid we had 7000 flu cases.

I think the inventor was telling the truth!

biden proved the kung flu is a scam when he waltzed into the white house, disbanded trump’s “operation warp speed”, opened our southern border, and continues to covertly spread over 2,000,000 nondocumented unvaccinated invaders across our country during a supposed “global pandemic” while anthony fauci, the cdc, the nih, the world health organization, the enemedia, hollywierd, and the majority of our elected representatives sit back and watch...

“The CDC’s analysis didn’t factor in people who had antibodies from vaccination.”

Because we know now, the immunity from the vaccine doesn’t last very long. but post infection immunity is very long lasting.

Not trusting the CDC anymore, I suspect we have reached herd immunity and Covid is OVER.

@ post 7. Agree with your comment. Hopefully the trend continues. I would suggest we always could have lived with the disease without lockdowns, mask mandates and irrational pressure/coersion to vaccinate healthy people with experimental treatments.

Warn the vulnerable, quarantine the sick.
