U.S. intel helped Ukraine protect air defenses, shoot down Russian plane carrying hundreds of troops

As Russia launched its invasion, the U.S. gave Ukrainian forces detailed intelligence about exactly when and where Russian missiles and bombs were intended to strike, prompting Ukraine to move air defenses and aircraft out of harm’s way, current and former U.S. officials told NBC News.

That near real-time intelligence-sharing also paved the way for Ukraine to shoot down a Russian transport plane carrying hundreds of troops in the early days of the war, the officials say, helping repel a Russian assault on a key airport near Kyiv.

It was part of what American officials call a massive and unprecedented intelligence-sharing operation with a non-NATO partner that they say has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s success to date against the larger and better-equipped Russian military.

In this case it is unlikely that a US president even matters anymore. Once you “let loose the dogs of war”, they go where they will, and are no longer under your control. A US president is just along for the ride, the war will follow its own logic, or lack of logic.

Europe (its public) is united and committed to supporting the Ukrainians, full stop. If a US president had a different policy he would just have been ignored.

Il-76MD-90A can carry 126 parachutists or 145 troops in single deck arrangement and 225 troops in double-deck arrangement. It can also house special equipment to carry 114 injured persons.

I like to listen to the piano music of the video while imagining 225 Russian invaders loading for their death.

If anyone cares to go back months, I believe the make and model of that aircraft was mentioned in several stories posted on FR. Not that it matters a whit.

A good place to start on the course of all this is the classic history of the Cold War, by John Lewis Gaddis “The Cold War: A New History”.

Reading about Rome might be more instructive.

You’re an idealist. I’m a realist.

**************

Here’s a lesson in reality for you: Imagine if another country in our hemisphere wanted to establish close military ties with Russia or China. We wouldn’t tolerate that for one minute. For the same reason, Russia will never allow Ukraine to join NATO or get to the point where is it perceived as a threat to it. Simple as that. Make no mistake, we would do much the same thing if necessary to protect our national security.

(BTW you don’t know a thing about my background yet presume to define me as an idealist merely because I have a view that differs from your sermon. I have done mission planning work for the military. Need I say more? I also find it very odd that you would post a Wikipedia link as a valid reference to anything. Its something rarely seen on FR because of its well known liberal tilt and selective use of facts.)

“I say first of all where is your proof that Russia has more than the 1 bomb they exploded.”

****************

Making ignorant statements like that reflects poorly on Free Republic. If you’re going to continue posting on this forum please up your game and awareness of facts.

But if you really require proof a report released just last month by the Federation of American Scientists (FAM) found that Russia had a stockpile of approximately 4,477 nuclear warheads in total. Of this number, roughly 1,588 were strategic warheads that had been deployed.

If you want to challenge FAM or think you’re better informed than they are be my guest.

Other facts about the Russian nuclear arsenal are available but that should suffice to dispel any misconceptions you have about their formidable capabilities.

You have just described Cuba. Venezuela. Nicaragua. And you are describing hemisphere a little too narrowly. Thanks to alliance commitments, our hemisphere includes Western Europe and the Western Pacific.

While its true that those countries have established cooperative economic and military arrangements with Russia they are not the same thing as being in a mutual defensive pact or alliance like NATO. That’s what I meant by “close military ties”.

And imagine if any of those countries shared a border with the U.S. How long do you think we would tolerate a perceived threat like that?

I think you would agree that there are some international realities that impose certain limits on relationships between countries.
