“At will” works both ways.

They are used to sitting at home and working maybe 30 minutes a day and getting paid for 8 hours.

As opposed to driving in to the office and working maybe 30 minutes a day and getting paid for 8 hours? If you can't tell whether the productivity has dropped for those working from home as opposed to those in the office then you're a pretty bad manager. If the work is getting done where does it matter where it's getting done?

about 25 years ago I decided that I wanted to work longer hours and make less money so I went into business for myself.

LOL, same here. Even when you pay for all that commercial rental space in town, you still needed a home office with a modem (remember those) to deal with customer issues.

Still, the only ones who seem to be upset with WFH are the middle managers who are being exposed as largely useless. Dinosaurs. Shoved aside by SCRUM masters, product owners and the like.

No sympathy for those who won’t go because they don’t like the way people talk to them. You will NEVER be able to fix that.

I don't disagree with your post until I get to this sentence.

I'm in total agreement: we can't fix the idiots who treat others like crap. That's on them, not on us.

Here's my problem with going back to the office: the trip in is unsafe. Walking through the bio-hazard that is Shitcago's south loop, the stench of urine, feces, homeless drug addicts is enough to make any normal person physically sick.

Telling me, a licensed conceal-carry permit holder who spends time at the range every week to stay in practice that I, at 60 years old, cannot defend myself from the vermin that infests "the loop" on a daily basis, looking for their next victim to pounce upon is a non-starter.

That the Chicago Police are ordered to stand down and not take down the criminals because "black lives matter" and the lying liberal lesbian licker lightweight lori lightfoot is weak on crime certainly isn't helping matters and the "news media" in Chicago isn't reporting the real situation in the city re: crime, filth, disease, homelessness and more is what continues to make Chicago a veritable "ghost town" because all it takes is one trip downtown "to the office" before damn' near every one of my co-workers including myself, says "NO!" we're not going back downtown.

So with respect because you're a long time Freeper who I've read and respected previously, your situation may be right for you.

It is not right for everyone.

I'm not going back downtown. Been there, done that. It's a fecal infested hellhole that isn't safe.

It didn't used to be that way. It is now. No one in their right mind goes into that city to work.

Best to you.

My employer was at an impasse pre-COVID, with growth rapidly outpacing office space. We were either going to go hybrid with hoteling or lease more office space. COVID forced the first option.

Better get used to having to work again.

Some of us are actually more productive at home that in the office. Stop generalizing.

That’s why I have 2 phones, 2 computers, and distinct emails.
I’m salary, but we charge “straight time” hourly rate for any OT.
Lines should be drawn.

I don’t know if that’s called alliteration or not, but the “L” sequence was quite fantastic.

I was talking about fixing them at the office per their behaviors, not self-defense. I am exactly like you in regard to self-defense.

Save 1.5 hours of travel, wear and tear on vehicle, gas money, and most important to me, no woke bitch that tries to destroy everyone.

Indeed. I started working from home about 5 years ago. The personal time and money saved was considerable. I am no longer interested in commuting at all. It's not appropriate for all positions and people though. You really have to already have a work ethic.

True. I’m mid 40’s and do electrical distribution design.
I’m the only one on most projects. There is nowhere to hide or excuses to be made.

Oh, and based on the city to which you are referring, I would do whatever it takes to move away from there. My son went through a program up north of Chicago and we mistakenly drove through Cicero on the way through Chicago. Never again.

I don’t like working from home. The fridge is there.

And it is calling your name! LOL

I am retired—but one of my big issues with the office was Laquisha two cubicles down spending all day on the phone loudly discussing her “child” and his legal problems.

It seems her “good boy” tended to commit a bunch of petty crimes and spent a lot of time in court and in jail.

Affirmative action makes the office environment a toxic workplace.

My particular line to draw was that work was work, and home was home, and the two did not mix. Much of what I did had to be done on property anyway.

If there ever comes a time where you have to visit this "fine state" ever again, please do contact me so I can tell you the best & safest way to get where ever you're going, so you'll arrive there safely and return home safely.

I have not gone to work in 7 years.

I make good money in my bathrobe.
