Sweden and Finland agree to both apply for NATO membership in May in defiance of Russian threats
Daily Mail ^ | 4.25.2022 | David Averre

Two newspapers - one Swedish, the other Finnish - have reported the governments of Sweden and Finland have agreed to submit NATO applications at the same time and that it will happen in the middle of next month.

Finnish newspaper Iltalehti said that the Swedish government has expressed a wish to Finland that they apply together in the week starting May 22 and Swedish government sources confirmed the information to Sweden's Expressen tabloid.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to growing support in Sweden and Finland, a Russian neighbour, for joining NATO.

Though not members, both Nordic countries closely co-operate with NATO, allowing, among other things, the alliance's troops to carry out exercises on their soil.

Helsinki and Stockholm have also substantially intensified their bilateral defence co-operation in the past years, and there was talk earlier this month that the Nordic territories could both seek to join NATO in the coming months amid Russian aggression.

Sweden signalled its intention to apply for NATO membership on April 13, in a move which infuriated Moscow lawmakers.

Sources told Sweden's SVD newspaper about the move on the same day that fellow neutral neighbour Finland started its debate on joining NATO after days of speculation it would do so.

Well I was giving Finland a pass for when they were helping the Nazis. But since then they had a nice safe arrangement. The Swedes were neutral from way before. Both have had 80 years of safety.
But their girl leaders want to be invited to that party.

They were specifically told don’t do it

Now I understand. You will swallow anything the government and it's media feed you. No wonder you are so sure that Ukraine good, Russia bad. Simple minded fool.

I notice you’re still not acknowledging that by your logic Russia should invade Alaska.

I never said should, but there would be justification. Just like we would for any credible threat that pointed nuclear weapons at us. But the size of the dog also has a lot to do with the decision to attack. Otherwise we would be all over Russia and China. It's all a cost/benefit analysis. If we could eliminate Russia as a threat at no cost, we would have done it already.

“Well I was giving Finland a pass for when they were helping the Nazis.”

You forget that the Russians invaded neutral Finland in 1939, which started The Winter War?

We don’t trust Russia, and Russia doesn’t trust us. What’s reality like on your planet?

Justification == should. And your quibbling about the size of the dog shows exactly why your position is silly. It’s one of those “sounds good until people start actually dying” things.

Meanwhile the RIGHT answer is that Putin should stop defining himself in opposition to the west. Heck he wanted to be in NATO until they told him he’d have to go through the normal approval process. Up until February NATO wasn’t opposed to him in any way. But now that he’s proven he’s an active threat countries he (and previous versions of the Russian government) have frequently harassed are seeing value in NATO.

He’s chosen to be an enemy of NATO. Which gets back to my original answer to your question: bad diplomacy. Putin has mishandled his relations to all his neighbors. Giving them great reason to not ally with him, and reasons to ally with anybody he doesn’t like.

We don’t trust Russia, and Russia doesn’t trust us.

Nobody ever implied otherwise. And for the record, I don't trust us ether.

No. That’s exactly -why- I gave em a pass for fighting with the Nazis. They were in a war with Stalin. Why they are joining today’s Nazis is less clear. Except that their millenial chick leader wants to be invited to conferences and have friends.

Maybe we shouldn't be defining ourselves in opposition to Russia. Who the hell do you think you are that you expect the whole world to aspire to be you? Russia hasn't done anything that we ourselves haven't done a half dozen times over the past decade or two.

We’re not.

I’m expecting people to use their heads. Hats are out of fashion, so you might as well think.

Face it, if Putin was a better leader, a better statesman, a better diplomat, Russia would be in NATO RIGHT NOW. And they wouldn’t have been stupid enough to demand Ukraine demilitarize or face invasion. Cause really, that’s just stupid. We’ve never demanded somebody demilitarize.

“What would you call it if China were to put a nuclear missal base on Cuba or in Mexico.”

Nice strawman. No one is calling for American nuclear weapons in Finland or Sweden.

And it’s called a question mark. Familiarize yourself with it.

“Do you think it is a win for the US?”

It’s a loss for you savages and that’s good enough for me. Russia has been killing Americans through proxies for decades. Korea, Viet Nam, those monsters who shot up airports and murdered businessmen in Europe during the 80s (does Bader-Meinhoff ring any bells?), and all those leftist terrorists all over the world for decades. Now it’s time for some payback. And I hope you get it up to your eyeballs.

“I expect the rise of the right in Europe by the end of this decade, and it is going to be rabidly anti-American.”

You expected to roll over Ukraine in a week. How’d that work out?

“Why they are joining today’s Nazis is less clear.”

You throw around the label “Nazi” with wild abandon. Please give us YOUR definition of “Nazi,” and identify for us just Nazis they want to join. Just so we know where you are coming from. I mean, Putin’s definition and yours might very well be different.

Complete BS argument. NATO And America have been talking and making threats to move tactical weapons up against Russia all over Europe. Add to that, NATO and America have zero credibility when it comes to stated intentions and agreements. To expect Russia to accept us at face value and take our word for it defies reality. Hell, I don't trust us and I'm an American.
