Even after all that Cuba remained a Soviet ally until there wasn’t a Soviet Union to be allied with. And then there’s Siberia. Russia has a border with us RIGHT NOW. And there’s nukes behind it. Russia has a social system that creates and nurtures serious personality problems. This is not just a Putin thing.
Russia simply cannot communicate a friendly attitude to anyone. And thats the whole of the Russian government. Most governments in the world try (they do try, very hard sometimes) to come across as benevolent, generous, trustworthy, deserving of our positive attention. Even the Soviets did. Much of this is to a significant degree hypocritical, but much is not.
But Russia... modern Russia doesnt do that.

I agree. It’s going to be difficult to get the Russians to act nice to each other let alone everyone else. But maybe the leader who replaces Putin after the assassination will work towards making Russia a nice place for the average Russian.
Do that and the Russians will stop thinking about what they can steal from everyone else.
