Sweden and Finland agree to both apply for NATO membership in May in defiance of Russian threats
Daily Mail ^ | 4.25.2022 | David Averre

Two newspapers - one Swedish, the other Finnish - have reported the governments of Sweden and Finland have agreed to submit NATO applications at the same time and that it will happen in the middle of next month.

Finnish newspaper Iltalehti said that the Swedish government has expressed a wish to Finland that they apply together in the week starting May 22 and Swedish government sources confirmed the information to Sweden's Expressen tabloid.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to growing support in Sweden and Finland, a Russian neighbour, for joining NATO.

Though not members, both Nordic countries closely co-operate with NATO, allowing, among other things, the alliance's troops to carry out exercises on their soil.

Helsinki and Stockholm have also substantially intensified their bilateral defence co-operation in the past years, and there was talk earlier this month that the Nordic territories could both seek to join NATO in the coming months amid Russian aggression.

Sweden signalled its intention to apply for NATO membership on April 13, in a move which infuriated Moscow lawmakers.

Sources told Sweden's SVD newspaper about the move on the same day that fellow neutral neighbour Finland started its debate on joining NATO after days of speculation it would do so.

“And when Russia acts to protect itself, will that be an unprovoked attack again?”

If Russia fires first then yes, it is an unprovoked war.

And things will get very hairy, very fast. We’ll also find out if the rumors of Swedish nuclear weapons are true or not.

Is anyone even remotely discussing putting nukes in Finland or Sweden?

Yes, that's what all this is about. Try to keep up.

If he hadn’t attacked the Ukraine he probably could have taken over the breakaway areas eventually anyhow.

I seriously doubt that. Our corrupt, fake government is on a crusade to poke Russia in the eye until it falls apart a la 1917. Billions in US arms have been committed to this effort, and it would have anyway, because nothing is more important than keeping war going!

I don't even know how to respond to that kind of simple minded ignorance.

“What would you call it if China were to put a nuclear missal base on Cuba or in Mexico?”

This trope was old a month ago. No one cares about a hypothetical that simply isn’t on the horizon right now.

Update your script.

Both are run by chicks. The Finn one is in her early 30s. They think emotionally and cannot stand the idea of a group they aren’t part of.
Made it through WWII and the Cold War being neutral.

But now these women know best in a scary world.

Ridiculous comment. The US has not moved any nukes out of Germany into any of the new NATO members, although Poland is now asking the US to consider it.

Face it, a country with the GDP of Italy (before sanctions) has picked a fight with 60% of the world's GDP and all the top military powers outside of China.

Another win for Putin the strategic genius!

What would you call it if China were to put a nuclear missal base on Cuba or in Mexico?

I have read this argument made a number of times on FR. If the US were threatening to invade Cuba or Mexico there would be some justification for these two countries to seek Chinese help and deploy missiles. But we are not. If anything, it's the US that faces a threat of 'invasion' from the south, though not in a military sense . Nato on the other hand is a 100% defensive organization. It's role is to protect Europe from exactly the kind of aggression the world is witnessing right now. Russia has always been an aggressor- since the start of the cold war, so if these countries want to join Nato there is a very good reason. It's not to threaten Russia.

Two Russian brigades were pulled off the border already - or one was on the Finnish border and the other was from Murmansk, they were deployed in the Chernighov-Sumy front if I recall correctly.

In other words the Russian forces on the Finnish border region seem to be rather thin just now.

If, as I hope, we see a rise of the right in the US, then no problem!

I expect the rise of the right in Europe by the end of this decade, and it is going to be rabidly anti-American.

I think you may be correct. How can NATO countries in Europe feel about the current price of oil and where the money is going, thanks to US policy?

With “climate change” bulls hit and trans-weirdism, the US has been a bad actor, globally, for a long time, now. I couldn’t give a rat’s hind end what the perverted “press” says about it, but Trump was a refreshing 4 years of sanity coming out of the US for a change.

Now, America has made it clear that it does not intend to stay that course. Our enemies, and friends, will learn to despise us.

If the US were threatening to invade Cuba or Mexico

America has more then meddled in these countries along with many others. And it wasn't that long ago we were willing to go to war with Russia over Cuba. It's like you people reset your memory every few months.

“I don’t even know how to respond to that kind of simple minded ignorance.”

>>I have decided that you’re a Nazi. You pose a threat to me because I called you a Nazi. Worse, you armed yourself and called on your allies because you fear me and now I’m angry at you because I can’t attack you with impunity therefore I have to attack you.<<

That’s the simple minded ignorance of Vladimir Putin and the current Russian government.

They attack their neighbors and then when their other neighbors react to the aggressive Russians the aggressive Russians use that reaction to justify more aggression.

Biden, for all his senile ramblings, at least got it right when he said that Putin has to go. There can be no accommodation and there can be no peace with a Russia that doesn’t honor the sovereignty of its neighbors.

Russia, of course, could choose not to be a threat to their neighbors. I know that’s crazy talk to you but maybe keeping your army of thugs, looters, murderers, and rapists at home would be preferable to starting wars you can’t win.
