Moldova expresses "deep concern" over Russian general's Transnistria comments
Axios ^ | 23 April 2022 | Jacob Knutson

Moldova's Foreign Ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to the country on Friday to express "deep concern" over recent comments made by a Russian general that suggested the Kremlin is targeting its territory.

Why it matters: Maj. Gen. Rustam Minnekayev said Friday that Russia seeks full control of southern Ukraine to give it another "another way out to Transnistria," referring to the unrecognized breakaway state internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

Minnekayev also claimed that the Moldovan government was oppressing the Russian-speaking population in Transnistria, echoing a claim that the Kremlin has used in its attempt to justify its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Moldova, like Ukraine, is not a member of the European Union or the NATO.

What they're saying: Moldova's Foreign Ministry said it summoned Oleg Vasnetov, the Russian ambassador to Moldova, in response to Minnekayev's comments.

"These statements are unfounded and contradict the position of the Russian Federation supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, within its internationally recognized borders," it said.

"During the meeting, it was reiterated that the Republic of Moldova, in line with its Constitution, is a neutral state and this principle must be respected by all international actors, including the Russian Federation." The big picture: Russia does not officially recognize the independence of Transnistria, but it does maintain a special relationship with the region, including stationing troops there.

Russia recognized two breakaway "republics" in eastern Ukraine as independent before invading the country to conduct "peacekeeping operations" in the separatist regions.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has galvanized traditionally neutral countries, including Finland and Sweden, into expressing interest in joining NATO or the EU or both.

Been saying this all along that this war was not about Ukraine in particular but about Russia and Putin's imperial ambitions in Eastern Europe.

I watched a tiny piece of, I think, FBI International.
It said they were in Transnistria.
I was like what kind of BS made up country is that?
Then I searched Google...

The Russians have no interest in Transnistria. In fact, they have not even invaded Ukraine. It is just the lies of the western media against the peaceful military of the U.S.S.R. Russia. Nothing to see here except Bill Gates, Covid vaccines, and globalists building mansions in New Zealand to survive their coming plans at depopulation. Nazis armed with microchips everyone of them!

Look! A squirrel!

Exactly. Once you start dealing with all of Russia’s demands that they are threatened by everybody, surrounded by Nazis, Russians are being oppressed everywhere, the countries historically belong to Russia, Russia needs access to somewhere -

You end up with a full blown war in Europe if you don’t stop it sooner.

Here’s a link to a map of the countries making up the Russian Federation. Most of these are probably more akin to US states than countries. They mostly make up a part of Russia because they have no other options. However, this war is going to cause a lot of problems if it drags on very long. In those fifteen countries are dozens of ethnicities that don’t have great memories of their wonderful times being associated with Russia. There is a lot of room there for either “enemy” intelligence units to stir up problems or problems that are already just bubbling below the surface. If the war goes on for long there will be an increasing need for peacekeepers (thugs) to convince (kick butts) potential separatists to not be potential separatists.

They can’t even hold the Ukraine and you think they’re going multi-country invasion?

I believe they want to, but do not possess the power to.

“Moldova? Please stop”

No. When the government of Moldova is objecting to Russian plans to violate a truce by using Moldovan territory as a launchpad for a Russian offensive against Ukraine then it’s a legitimate issue.

You may not like that it goes against your preferred narrative but that’s your problem and not mine.

Russia already has troops in Transnistria which is internationally recognized as Moldovan territory. If the Russians morph their alleged peacekeeping force into an attack force then don’t be surprised if Moldova attacks the Russian forces.

Because that’s what you do when your guests start killing your neighbors.

I’ll defer to Wiki here as it’s fairly neutral on this topic:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transnistria

“(Transnistria’s) origins can be traced to the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which was formed in 1924 within the Ukrainian SSR. During World War II, the Soviet Union took parts of the Moldavian ASSR, which was dissolved, and of the Kingdom of Romania’s Bessarabia to form the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1940.

The present history of the region dates to 1990, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was established in hopes that it would remain within the Soviet Union should Moldova seek unification with Romania or independence, the latter occurring in August 1991. Shortly afterwards, a military conflict between the two parties started in March 1992 and concluded with a ceasefire in July that year.

As part of the ceasefire agreement, a three-party (Russia, Moldova, Transnistria) Joint Control Commission supervises the security arrangements in the demilitarised zone, comprising 20 localities on both sides of the river.[citation needed] Although the ceasefire has held, the territory’s political status remains unresolved: Transnistria is an unrecognised but de facto independent presidential republic[16] with its own government, parliament, military, police, postal system, currency, and vehicle registration.[17][18][19][20] Its authorities have adopted a constitution, flag, national anthem, and coat of arms.

After a 2005 agreement between Moldova and Ukraine, all Transnistrian companies that seek to export goods through the Ukrainian border must be registered with the Moldovan authorities.[21] This agreement was implemented after the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) took force in 2005.[22] Most Transnistrians have Moldovan citizenship,[23] but many also have Russian, Romanian, or Ukrainian citizenship.[24][25] The main ethnic groups are Russians, Moldovans/Romanians, and Ukrainians.”

My focus is Russia and its dictator and his imperial ambitions. I’ve said for a long time that Moldova would eventually be invaded by Russia if Russia succeeded in Ukraine. The Moldovans obviously think the same thing and that’s why they’re fast tracking their membership in the EU and why they’ve also sent a delegation to Brussels to consult with NATO.
