Wow. That’s disturbing. IIRC, that was about the time there was a big upheaval in the SBC when the modernists were trying to take over. It seems they go through that every couple of decades.
We attended an SBC church in the mid-’90s. The choir was practicing a number referring to “the blood of Jesus Christ”. The director was wondering if we should change the words, or not do that song, because “some people are offended by talking about the blood”. He had graduated from a pretty fundamental Bible college, and was in charge of the K-12 school. We ended up doing it.
We left some months later. That was an issue, plus a lot of CCM slowly making its way into the regular services. And they were starting to do merchandising (with nobody there to turn over the tables).
