DeSantis threatens Disney’s special status in Florida

Ron DeSantis on Tuesday said that the state’s legislature will consider terminating the special status of a municipal district operated by Walt Disney Co., the Wall Street Journal reports.

It’s an escalation in the weeks-long feud between the Republican governor and Disney.

“We are expanding the call of what the state legislature will be considering this week,” DeSantis said, per Bloomberg. “They also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968, and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District.”

Techincally yes, it would fall back to the counties BUT Disney is not paying any taxes to Florida as far as I can see. From the article:

Under that agreement, Disney runs the district as the entertainment juggernaut were a local government, including collecting taxes and guaranteeing essential public services such as garbage collection and water treatment.

The district is governed a Board of Supervisors selected by its 19 landowners, the biggest and most influential of them being Disney World.

It also has the authority to tax the land and use the revenue to provide essential public services and operate and maintain all public roads and bridges.

So Florida could tax them out of existence once they have control again. I'll be they could make a lot more than it's going to cost.

' Can’t do that anymore.'

Reminds me of the ‘rotten boroughs’ in the English Parliament in the bad old days.

Yes, those aren’t the seasons I’m looking for. Too bad there isn’t enough snow in Florida to get me to move back permanently. I just wish Spring would arrive here in the Midwest earlier than it does...and wouldn’t be so short. I’m ready to plant and we aren’t out out the woods on temps below freezing just yet. Maybe in a month?

We do have 4 seasons here:

1) Early summer
2) Summer
3) August (also referred to as humidity central)
4) Late Summer (also referred to as fall/winter)

What’s the problem?

Yes, there were WH lakes with alligators. There weren’t many in the lakes where I water skied a little north of there.

*** Just pay attention.***

That’s my point. I’d like to not have to do that. Watching out for trees and branches in the water is enough.

When I was skiing, I lived in Gainesville (mid 70s). I also lived in Winter Park, Maitland, and Winter Haven before that, always on lakes.

That’s probably why many homes in Florida have screened in pool areas. Helps keep the alligators out. ;)

I think a lot of that is because of the urban sprawl of Florida, I don’t know how old you are, but think about 40-50 years ago and what Florida was like then, Disney was barely open, the population of Florida was half or less than what it is today. move all those gators out of their areas and force them more in smaller areas.

I have a screened in pool, the best reason to have one is to keep out the debris like leaves, pine needles, etc...makes cleaning a lot easier.

Growing up my parents had a pool without a screen, we did have the occasional rattlesnake get in the pool but no alligators.

Colorado could not function without special districts. We have too many small towns and unincorporated areas. Many fire departments and park and rec districts provide essential services. Also quite a few library districts.

They are also used to finance infrastructure improvements in new residential real estate developments, although that is controversial because of developer influence if not corruption over developer districts.

Anyhow, they should rein Disney in so long as they don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
