Depending on the side you choose to believe, the ship was either hit by 2x R-360 "Neptun" ASMs, or suffered a catastrophic ammunition fire. You decide.

But still no word from the Russians on the fate of the crew.

The Russians published pictures of the crew to prove they were rescued, included in the line up appearing live and well was the dead Russian captain.

Not nearly as hazardous as becoming tank crew.

Yeah I mean are these ships really sitting ducks now? Is there a capable defense against missles

Unless we have some sort of nuclear powered laser on every ship (for power and longevity) and a early warning system that can see incoming missiles miles away, what is the point?

And hypersonic missiles just multiplied that threat ten fold.

What about a hypersonic missile that explodes multiple warheads 5000 to 500 feet from the ship? what could stop that?

I said a couple of days ago that Russia is "losing" on purpose, but even if they aren't, they are equipped for intercontinental warfare. They can still sink our ships. They can still launch nukes. And according to some research i have seen, They are capable of launching a first strike EMP which will render our land based missiles useless. Anything launched from our subs in retaliation will be shot down by their decidedly low tech method of launching 10000 or so rockets at anything incoming. THIS is why Russia only has one real carrier. The way they will fight will not be the way we fight loser countries, and it will be for keeps.

It was an old ship. When your flagship is a 43 year old non-nuclear cruiser, you need to rethink your status as an alleged naval power.

Not a perfect defense, but if CIWS or “seewizz” (close-in weapons system) were (1) active, and (2) functioning, it should have been able to take two missiles out. Can’t take either (1) or (2) for granted when it comes to the Rooskies.

Virtually all land based missiles and C23 are radiation hardened for EMP, at least on our side.

I think tanks should be used in mop up situations. When cities are leveled, the populace is defeated and scattered, and you need something heavy and scary to be there in bulk.

” They are capable of launching a first strike EMP which will render our land based missiles useless. “

Just one example of the B.S. in your comments. Military gear is hardened against EMP.

Reminds me of that Gilbert and Sullivan song from The Mikado: I’ve Got a Little List.

That’s a perfect hit on what those anti-ship targets go after, the tallest point on the superstructure and center mass.

I’s think the details would be classified. I suppose they could be overloaded but with that many high altitude explosions they’d probably be better off just targeting the launchers directly.

North Korea and Russia have satellites that orbit over the US at all times. Many claim there are EMPs on them. I did not hear about the NK’s level of sophistication, but I hear the Russian satellites have EMPs that are stronger than the protection the 30-50 year old installations have
