The thing CNN for some reason decided to omit is that the city is under full Russian control except steel works where about 3,000 out of the original garrison of 14,800 are entrenched. The plant can be leveled without civilian casualties.
The intact Plant is an Objective.
After verifiably destroying 90% of Mariupol with artillery and bombing, I am sure the Russkies are concerned about "civilian casualties" now.
The problem with any map of control is it is meaningless.
Ukrainian troops move back and forth across the supposed line of Russian control attacking at the time and place that are convenient to them.
That’s the problem with urban combat. The only real way to take a city is to level every building, and even then there is a lot of cover to be found in the ruble.
