India's monthly oil purchase from Russia less than what Europe buys in an afternoon: Jaishankar

Washington: India's total purchase of oil from Russia in a month is probably less than what Europe does in an afternoon, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said.

"I noticed you refer to oil purchases. If you are looking at energy purchases from Russia, I would suggest that your attention should be focused on Europe. We do buy some energy, which is necessary for our energy security. But I suspect looking at the figures, probably our total purchases for the month would be less than what Europe does in an afternoon," Jaishankar told a reporter when asked about India's oil purchase from Russia.

Jaishankar was addressing a joint news conference with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with their American counterparts Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, after the conclusion of the 2+2 Ministerial on Monday.

It’s been reported that Biden wants oil from Venezuela. I mean the guy running the show there is just wonderful (sarcasm) and it’s been reported that OPEC told him to buzz off. How long before he turns to Iran with hat in hand?

That will be a nasty financial hit for Russia.

Russia was raking it in at $88 a barrel in early February and I imagine they’re buying at somewhere between that at $100 a barrel, which no doubt India and other countries are also doing.

Perhaps. But one Freeper on here provided a thread showing a map of the countries officially on board with sanctions and a large percentage of the countries of the world aren’t.

I wonder how many of them are buying from Russia at a discount and how much oil China is buying, along with how many Russian tankers have turned off their transponders.

Biden isn’t really good at beimg president.

Some here were promoting the India-Russia deal for Russia to sell oil to India “at a discount” and I have been saying it was more geopolitical theater, mostly on India’s part (demonstrting it’s historic geopolitical “neutrality”) than a very material deal.

India is buying all they can but... Without a pipeline they can’t take a really huge amount.

Same problem with the USA sending supply to Europe.

They send a lot of very big ships, but it’s nothing compared to what a pipeline was sending. They also don’t have enough port facility infrastructure yet to do much

Not really. Why would around 80% of the world’s population, represented by the number of countries not supporting sanctions, buy more expensive oil if they can get it cheaper?

I’m not sure if they were necessarily promoting it, but I also wonder just how much oil India, China, and all of these countries around the world are actually buying and if they are low-balling it.

And shame on Europe still buying Russian oil. They need to end all buying immediately.

Wikipedia:

The total 200 major and non-major ports [for India] are present in the following States: Maharashtra (53); Gujarat (40); Tamil Nadu (15); Karnataka (10) and others (82).

“Without a pipeline they can’t take a really huge amount.”

A pipeline from Russia to India would have to go over the Himalayas. At minimum extremely expensive and more likely impossible.

It’s more of a surprise that Russia/USSR never built a pipeline to cross Siberia and get oil and gas to China and the rest of Asia. Russia would be in a much stronger position if it could sell it oil and gas to countries outside of Europe.

Sanctions equal discounts to whatever country ignores them.

Several countries were having a grand time after the Bush’s No. 1 Persian Gulf for example (France/Germany etc... cough, cough).

It’s a power grab (Manipulating conditions from within), closer you are to the central government, the more you get “paid”. Several individuals who reside in India are just taking the advantage over Putin’s stupidity/frustration.

It’s a world-wide Kabuki Theater going on and the people who just want to live a normal life are getting screwed over, regardless if you are for or against the current “thing”.

yeah not many of those are fitted to offload huge natural gas ships. They have to spend a bunch to do it. And then they still run into limits on how many big ships there are and the large distances they have to travel

There you go using % population. Meaningless. The top 1% have a net worth of 45 trillion, half what the other 99% have. Would you want that 1% to be your customers or some percentage like 50 with 1/25th the wealth? The India has 1/10 the GDP of the US even though they have like 400 % more people. Who would you want as your customer?

Meanwhile...

The United States imports more petroleum products than crude oil from Russia

And we're not boycotting those, are we...

“And shame on Europe still buying Russian oil. They need to end all buying immediately.”

They can’t. They (Germany particularly) have dug themselves a “green” hole and now are absolutely dependent on Russian supplies. There are some Middle East pipeline deals up through Turkey to Europe, but mostly not yet running. That leaves Europe needing tanker supplies from the Middle East and the Saudis, etc., are not going to give them a price break against what global prices to Asia will fetch.
