Politicians from both parties, as well as the punditocracy in Colorado, are shaking their heads over the stunning and never-expected outcome Friday of the Republican assembly (convention) in the Centennial State's 4th District.
With 183 votes (62%) to 114 (38%) for four-term Rep. Kenneth Buck, R-Colo., political newcomer and Elbert County real estate broker Bob Lewis secured the top line of the Republican primary June 28.
Buck's incumbency notwithstanding, his near-demise at the assembly was particularly surprising because he is known as a stalwart conservative from both his voting record in Congress (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 98%) and his almost-successful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
Lewis so far does not have a website, and reporters had to scramble to find a picture of the fledgling candidate.
Sources in Colorado who spoke to Newsmax said Buck's embarrassing performance at the party conclave was his endorsement of "never Trumper" Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., for renomination and his criticism of skeptics about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
"Buck publicly supported Liz Cheney because of his long time association with the Cheney family and that certainly irritated many conservatives and Trump loyalists," former State Republican Chairman Dick Wadhams told Newsmax.

Good. These people need to start paying a heavy price for their behavior.
L
Maybe they will start to remember “Representative” means toy are supposed to represent.
Ken Buck’s claim to fame is getting one of the first ‘hate crime’ convictions in the country.
Ping.
This is the most Republican district in the state. If Buck is a squish, then we can do better than him.
But that doesn’t mean we necessarily will do better — Buck’s challenger probably has as much campaign funding as he has name recognition: none, at least for now, and both of those things count for A LOT. Uninformed voters simply vote for the guy they’ve heard of, which is the incumbent 90% of the time; I would have called them “ignorant” voters instead of uninformed, but that would imply we’re talking about Democrats and this race is a Republican primary.
These a holes wear that race stuff as a suit of armor. Buck (no pun) them and you immediately are called a racist. Almost makes them invulnerable these days. Nothing today is decided on its merits without the handicap of being assessed against a racial score sheet.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Guy found out 'she' was a 'he', and beat 'it' to death with a fire extinguisher.
Should have just been a normal murder/manslaughter case, but Buck insisted on the 'hate crime' charges, to get his name in the news.
Look up ‘Angie Zapata’ if you want to learn more.
It was his continual dismissal of ELECTION INTEGRITY issues!
He has stated Colorado has the "Gold Standard" for election security.
If this idiot reporter had followed what happened at State Assembly the next day he might have a clue.
I was a Delegate at both the CD-4 Assembly Friday and the State Assembly Saturday.
I'm a District Captain and all 10 of our Delegates were present and agreed on the sentiment in the room.
I was prepared to ask Buck whether he had read the 3rd Report from Mesa County which makes clear the DATABASE in the Dominion machines had been replaced, and had that report with me.
When the Bob Lewis nomination from the floor came up, that question was no long necessary.
The only thing that matters is the senate seat. Doable?
Then ask: Is Robert safe?
Wow! You were there. What was that like?
Hahaha!!
Exactly correct, they are not some royal king and do as they please.
Ron Hanks was the only 1 of 6 candidates to make it to the ballot via Assembly.
O'Day made it on via petition.
I'm afraid neither have sufficient Independent support to beat Bennet.
I have no idea who "Robert" is.
Lewis spoke and hit all of the key Conservative issues, including Election Integrity, and sounded like he was ready to FIGHT, rather that be a rubber stamp for Macarthy's luke warm agenda.
We sensed that Lewis had enough support to get the 30% necessary to get on the ballot, but were quite surprised when we heard that Buck only got 114 votes to Lewis's 183.
All of "my" Delegates voted for Lewis.
Another one down but so many more to go.
