Pilot shortage weighs on airlines

TRAVERSE CITY — Passengers are lining up to fly to Traverse City, but airlines are having trouble lining up enough crews to pilot their planes. The result will be fewer commercial flights landing at Cherry Capital Airport this summer.

“We’re not going to see as many flights as we had before,” Cherry Capital Airport Northwest Regional Airport Authority CEO Kevin Klein said this week.

“The number of flights and the number of aircraft that are available to fly is all going to be dependent on the amount of crews and pilots and flight attendants that the airlines have.”

Bad weather over the weekend delayed some spring break travelers, including some local residents returning home to northern Michigan. But that short-term problem pales alongside the growing disruption of the nationwide shortage of commercial pilots.

“There has been a looming pilot shortage for the last decade in the United States, that going through COVID, it became an actual pilot shortage,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said while testifying at a December hearing of the U.S. Senate’s Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.

The civilian aviation industry always depended on guard, reserve, and ex-military pilots for sufficient quantities of air crews.

With fewer manned military aircraft and more remotely piloted vehicles, that source has provided fewer and fewer pilots for the airlines. With layoffs post 9/11, layoffs during the 2008 depression, layoffs during the globalist lockdowns for the Scamdemic, and forced mandates for the Jim Jones Jab, many younger folks correctly view a career as an airline pilot as non-viable.

From a larger picture perspective, this is all part of the ongoing failure of bringing in unskilled illegal aliens. Entire industries pretend these replacement Americans can fill highly skilled jobs and use that fallacy to suppress wages. It's a fiction that's been falling apart for decades and even overturning the unconstitutional laws since Roe v. Wade will take generations to address the shortages.

Which is all self-inflicted. It’s called *consequences*.

Not interested in hearing their whining.

Feeder airline pilots... crap jobs only someone desperate would take. They can’t find pilots because they don’t pay and the terms are terrible.

Of course this pilot shortage is in no way connected to jab mandates - pilots quitting or fired, nor is it connected to any jabbed pilots failing medicals.

Heard where some airlines are flying an unjabbed pilot with a jabbed one - too many scary situations have come up on various flights with jabbed pilots. If true, that might impact putting crews together, too

I have been told that the starter jobs for feeder airlines actually pay much more than before. Enough to make a living anyway and better conditions. Long overdue in my opinion.

United Airline started hiring unqualified/underqualified Affirmative Action pilots. Think about that next time your fly.

Must be that a few thousand airline pilots who refused the vaxxxxx, quit or retired. More ominous is, that perhaps we have thousands of pilots who are too ill to fly, due to getting 2-3-4 vaxxxes. Perhaps they cannot pass the physical now, due to vaxxxx induced heart problems.

May firing airline staff isn’t such a hot idea after all.

Can’t we bring in a few thousand illegal alien pilots from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador?
