BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WROC) — Anthony Bottom, who now goes by Jalil Muntaqim, spoke at a virtual event as an invited guest of a SUNY Brockport faculty member Wednesday, prompting the college to cancel evening classes and activities.
The event has sparked an ongoing controversy as Bottom was convicted in 1971 in the killing of two New York City Police officers. He spent nearly five decades in prison before being released on parole in 2020.
College officials say Bottom was invited to speak at the school by Dr. Raphael Outland, of the department of counselor education. The school also said they do not support categorizing Bottom as a “political prisoner,” as event organizers originally described him, yet they said they respect the right of faculty members to call him such.

That didn't take long. Free money update!
$20 million approved for Syracuse University Carrier Dome renovations
I don’t have a problem with giving this guy a platform. He did his time for his crime. Let’s the debates rage.
The guy probably is of more sound mind than the president and more articulate.
The issue is how these public institutions (schools, governments) spend taxpayer money as though it grows on trees. Coupled with policies designed to steer that money towards “disadvantaged” people with affirmative action hiring policies, they are truly biting the hands that feed - and in the case of NY (and my state of NJ), those hands have been fleeing for years.
NY is the state that offers “free” tuition in exchange for the same number of corresponding years after graduation living in the state - and when job prospects there are so poor, it isn’t attracting/retaining bright young NYers as they envisioned.
I’m thinking the families of the cops he killed don’t care about how “articulate” he is.
If there was any justice, he would have had a date with ol’ sparky decades ago.
