Status of the war in Ukraine

Despite everyone and their neighbor saying how Ukraine can win this, they are getting beat pretty badly. At some point they need to stop the bleeding, literally, and negotiate a settlement. But in the end, that is totally up to the Ukrainians. It's not our war.

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of an army that is both being beat badly and retaking vast swathes of enemy held territory.

42 days? I thought this would be over in a few days. Says something about the Ruskies ability and tactics. Whatever you want to say about propaganda, the Ruskies are falling short of that mean old bear routine.

They are retaking areas that the Ruskies are moving out of to focus on Eastern and Southern geography that they want.

Then they spent 5 weeks, men and equipment fighting for territory that was not their prime objective when they could have concentrated their forces in the east with more secure supply lines and taken all of Donbass which was what they wanted in the first place. Not very smart.

It's not our war.

But DO NOT ever mention that, unless you want to be called a communist, AND a fascist, AND gay, AND a Kremlin troll, AND a weasel, AND a pantywaist, AND a panzie, AND an appeaser, AND a Putinista, AND someone who defends rape AND murder, etc., etc., etc.

One thing for sure, you can always count on 'conservatives' to discuss things like adults, and keep America First by avoiding unnecessary foreign wars! \sarc

They obviously thought they could take Kyiv and decapitate the government quickly.

Now they have no choice but to try to hang on to what they took in 2014. Based on the latest negotiations I expect Ukraine to keep pushing.

Russia has no way of effectively countering the manpads and anti-aircraft missiles pouring into Ukraine. Add in the Harpoons in the news recently and I don’t see any upside for Russia.

If the Kerch Strait Bridge gets taken out, it’s another huge problem for Russia,

Russia believed that they could take Kiev quickly with a sudden massive incursion, that Zelensky and his team would quickly head for Paris with whatever cash they could carry. Biden thought the same.

But they didn’t. They fought Russia to a standstill and exacted an enormous cost. Obviously, they suffered an enormous cost too.

But in the end te capture of Kiev is for them optional. What is not optional is the capture and annexation of the Ukrainian southeast. So the war shifts to the land bridge from Crimea to Russia proper. That they must hold, and for Ukraine winning it back is also absolutely necessary. So the war is only just starting.

Whatever you want to say about propaganda, the Ruskies are falling short of that mean old bear routine.

Lt General (3 Star) Mark Hertling says the Russians are going to have a difficult time recombining their forces for a number of reasons. Further adding, the UA is on track to defeat and possibly destroy the Russian Army.

Watching this video we learn that the 46 Brigade is not actually part of the Russian army, but a police-like unit tasked with eliminating “undesirables” and “cleaning of the local population”. It was created to “clean up the population” in Chechnya. It is responsible for Bucha and other horrors.

It is stretched from the north of Kiev to the Sea of Azov area with 15,000 troops. Pieces of the 46th are located in different areas. Parts of it are called the Battalion South, Battalion North, 141st Regiment.

Daily detailed map updates of front lines in English: includes unit designations and assesments from both sides.

Even if possible Putin would never allow it. He’d use those new fangled tac nukes Russia has spent billions on. It’s obvious Russia has not moved on from its WW2 op plans. Line every gun up and fire indiscriminately. Line up every tank and charge. It destroyed the Wehrmacht but Russia does not have 300 divisions anymore. It is doubtful if they have 100 maneuver battalions. They still have arty, traditional and rocket, but no effective FO, so they just shoot or launch in the general direction. They have faced a well armed, for defense, and dedicated army for the first time since ‘45. But that army can defend but lacks the power to expel the Russians. But if the Ukies can be constantly resupplied this could go on like Iran Iraq.

No doubt they can flatten the place and bounce the rubble, then march in and plant the flag. They excel at that. But when it comes to "surgical" warfare, with precision objectives, they have no culture for it. It's outside the skill of their standard doctrine to competently execute. So there's a drawn out slug fest while their generals try to beat a square peg into a round hole.
