But reactions of US officials perhaps also betray their frustration at failing to make Moscow comply. While it is true that Australia, Britain, Canada and the US have banned purchase of Russian oil, none of them are major buyers in any case.
The reality is that China is the largest buyer of Russian oil, procuring almost half of Russia’s total. Clearly, the Biden presidency has no wherewithal to make Beijing change its mind as it further expands its imports.
What is especially disheartening for the Biden presidency is that the next nine largest buyers of Russian oil are Germany, the Netherlands, the US, Poland, South Korea, Belgium, Turkey, France and the UK. Other than the US and UK, all of these countries have continued to buy Russian oil, while Germany and Hungary have openly opposed any hasty reductions, fearing that could push their economies into recession.
So while the US finds it difficult to persuade its own alliance partners to stop passing on petrodollars to finance Russia’s military operations, it finds it convenient to try to browbeat New Delhi. This defies logic, as although India is world’s third-largest importer of oil, as Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri informed Parliament this week, its oil imports from Russia constitute less than 1% of the total, whereas the United States accounts for more than 7%.
In fact it is interesting to note the recent BBC report that 55% of India’s oil imports come from the US and its close allies Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This therefore has little to do with New Delhi’s oil imports. The Biden presidency seems completely geared to deprive Russia of all its defense and economic partnerships, such that India’s close connections with Moscow make it a collateral of American agenda-setting.

We are just blowing up the status of the dollar as the world reserve currency.
At the end, America will just be Argentina with nukes, the dollar will be the American Peso, and imports will cost multiples of what they cost today.
People and nations do whatever is in their interests. As Churchill said, “Nations do not have friends. Nations have common interests.” Well, nations also have their own interests. For example, Israel has not gone along with the West’s sanctions, nor have they voted in favor of any anti-Russian proposals. (Not as of earlier this week, at least.) Why is that? Because Russia allows Israel to strike at Iranian assets deep inside Syria. Such strikes, which are literally keeping war at arm’s length, would be difficult, costly and/or impossible without Russia’s tacit “help.” Thus, Israel walk’s a tightrope. (There are some 200,000 “dual citizens” inside Ukraine.)
India has some good reasons to back Russia. When India was all on its lonesome and the US backed Pakistan, it was Russia that stepped in and sold India what it needed to survive as a functional, free state. The US was clearly on the “wrong” side then and can hardly claim the moral high ground now.
The world is a complicated and fractious place. I am not at all impressed with the Biden regime and our nation’s focus on spreading alphabet ideology over peace and prosperity is annoying to the world at large. I’ve known several retired former highly placed State Department stooges and I was astounded at their monopolar focus on bringing gayness to the world.
Well russia is Mexico with nukes, so we'll be on more even footing. Well, except that we've gone full soviet, whereas the former soviets have morphed into common mafia.
It all makes sense if one considers that the main focus of US Foreign affairs is to reduce America’s influence in the world. Washington’s main focus is Washington, and everything else is just a nuisance. When dims are in control of foreign policy the level of incompetence is always breathtaking.
Yes. We are less united now than in 1860. It’s all falling apart.
You’ve got it wrong:
Schwab et al elites are the ‘mafia’ (of which elements of our government are a major component).
The Russians are just a piece on the board, as are - collectively - you & I.
which is why India abstained from the Russia U.N. vote yesterday, some ally. Brandan sure is good at coalition building.
India is not and never has been our friend. Time to give them a choice—side with us or Russia. If the choose the latter, end H1B and deport all Indians, cut off all commerce with India. We should do that anyway.
You make a good point but it fails to consider time.
Ceasing gas purchases from Russia may and likely will severely disrupt the lives of all Russians as the economy is seriously disrupted. The Russian economy is gas revenue dependent. During the time of disruption, continuation of the Ukraine invasion will be affected.
At home lack of imports on which the population has come to rely will create anti government sentiment. The resultant sudden alteration of economic circumstance can induce anti Putin activism on a large scale. Although how the sentiment will be expressed is unknown, it will not be pro Putin.
Time thus becomes an important factor. The absence of gas in Europe will not be as strongly as the lack of an economy in Russia.
Putin will be gone and the gas can return. Russia will be required to pay reparations for the damage in Ukraine for a long time.
This is really incredibly stupid on the Biden admin’s part. We need to be wooing India to try to bring them into our camp. Them aligning with Russia and China would be a disaster of the first order - on par with driving Russia into China’s arms which our deep state warmongers have managed to accomplish already.
Why should India care whether the US ends H1B?
Unless they’re spies, ending H1B in the US doesn’t harm the Indian state.
Don’t be absurd.
India is an ally AGAINST China.
China is the real enemy. Not Russia.
This is just the Cold War era non aligned nations playing games. Nothing new here.
If you want a good laugh listen to an Indian boast that we need their H-1B.
