Referendum officially invalid after fewer than 50 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots
After weeks of talk about a tight electoral race in Hungary's general election, voters delivered a two-thirds parliamentary majority to incumbent Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party on Sunday.
But a separate referendum held on LGBTQ and transgender issues was declared invalid after a campaign by groups to spoil ballots.
Orbán's government said the referendum was a vote on child protection laws, but critics say the questions amounted to discrimination against the LGBTQ community and an attempt to whip up fear over what children are taught in school and exposed to in media.
"I find this stupid," Ágnes Kapornay told CBC at a polling station in the capital, Budapest, on Sunday, after she crossed out all of the questions on her referendum ballot.
"For a stupid question, I can't give a correct answer." A spoiled ballot from the April 3 referendum. Human rights groups in Hungary called for government opponents to ruin their ballots so the referendum would be declared invalid because not enough voters participated. Of those who cast valid votes for the referendum, more than 90 per cent voted no to the following four questions:
Do you support the teaching of sexual orientation to underage children in public education institutions without parental consent? Do you support the promotion of sex reassignment therapy for underage children? Do you support the unrestricted exposure of underage children to sexually explicit media content that may affect their development? Do you support the showing of sex-change media content to minors?

Winning 2/3rds of the vote doesn’t sound like a “tight election”. I see that the press is absolutely garbage no matter what country you go to.
Am I misunderstanding? 90% of the votes supported the referendum which protects children from sexual perversion grooming, but the minority was able to kill the majority vote by invalidating enough of the total ballots cast?
That is my take on it as well. Protect the children.

The Hungarian government posed four questions to voters in yesterday’s referendum (results):
Do you support the holding of sexual orientation sessions for minor children in public education without parental consent?
No: 63.6%. Yes: 5.2%. Spoiled: 31.1%.
Do you support the promotion of gender reassignment treatments for minors?
No: 65.5%. Yes: 2.8%. Spoiled: 31.7%.
Do you support the unrestricted introduction of sexual media content to minors, which affects their development?
No: 65.0%. Yes: 3.2%. Spoiled: 31.8%.
Do you support the display of gender-sensitive media content to minors?
No: 64.8%. Yes: 3.3%. Spoiled: 31.9%.
Because the opposition had its voters spoil their ballots, the referendum did not reach the minimum threshold for validity. Nevertheless, a clear picture emerges: two-thirds of Hungarian voters are resolutely against the promotion of sexual content, including sex-reassignment content, to children. Only a tiny fraction of voters dared to express support for these propositions. Facing another landslide defeat, the Left chose to have liberalism cancel democracy rather than allow democracy to cancel liberalism.
Something isn't adding up here. If 55% of the voters intentionally skipped that question on the ballot, it couldn't be just the pro-grooming pedo voters. A lot of people must have skipped it for some other reasons.
