If Putin had followed the advice offered in the Belmont Club just before the Ukraine War, Russia might still be a first-rank power. On Feb 21, 2022, I argued that he had no chance of conquering Ukraine and would be crazy to try. “Fears over Vladimir Putin’s threatened invasion of Ukraine continue to grow despite the fact that the effort would burst both Russia’s military and economy, not to mention ruining its foreign relations. Swallowing a poison pawn makes so little sense that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Russia’s Putin may be ‘irrational,’ unable to act in his own best interests.” Invading only to fail was so absurd that I reasoned his menaces must be a bluff. Since the threat was worth more than the fulfillment, his best option was not to invade but to drag out the suspense.

Perhaps as in so many cases in history the bite is in the bark; and in this case the bark is quite real. Putin has created an “invasion-in-being.” In naval warfare, the analogous concept of a “fleet in being” is a force that projects menace without ever leaving port. Were it to fight it might lose and no longer influence but while it remains in port, one is forced to guard against it. …

Putin has been doing the same thing on land. His armies are essentially “in port” — inside Russia or the Kremlin’s client states. Meanwhile Ukraine and the West are in an uproar, evacuating their citizens, canceling airline flights — never enjoying a moment’s mental security. Yet Putin can keep the invasion-in-being poised and the resulting disruption going indefinitely.

Nato has been creeping east. Nato welched on many agreements.

Putin stated he wants to de-Nazify Ukraine. So far, Putin is wiping out the Army and Nazi’s
Kiev is the spiritual center of the Russian Church. I do not think Putin would flatten the spiritual center of his church, just like I think the Italians would not flatten the Vatican

The Russian speaking east were always part of culture and history of the Rus people.
Stalin grabbed parts of Poland, etc. and added that to Ukraine. Those lands will be independant or go back to Poland, Romania, Hungry.

I hope this gets wrapped up quick. The Ukraine army tortures prisoners of war, and could very likely be the ones executing civilian collaborators
Folks will soon have to plant crops to have a fall harvest.

Rusdian troops are openly discussing their execution of civilians on open channels, presumably ignorant of the fact multiple intelligences are listening in.

Russia has warned of a major atrocity to be carried out on Ukrainian civilians by Ukrainian forces at around 6pm... In a Russia controlled town surrounded by Russian troops who’re shipping out later.

If they’re not actually signposting an atrocity they’re about to commit themselves, and they have the manpower to stop or diminish such an attack, why leave the area?

Russia’s military newspaper from yesterday basically says they’re on a special operation in Russia, attacking Nazi invaders. It calls pn 19th century symbolism and name checks Peter The Great.

1995’s book by Vladimir Zhirinovsky talked about shipping Ukrainian khokols to Alaska after taking it back from the USA while creating a big Eurasian empire. This week, Medvedev literally repeated that ambition and extended its scope to Europe... Mentioned Lisbon, ie all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

But keep kidding yourself that any of this action by Russia ever was about suppressing 4000 Azov Nazis in the breakaway regions.

All of Russia knows it’s not about that. A schoolteacher has been arrested for telling her class that the restoration of Imperial Russia is a bad idea. You’re not allowed to question Official Government Policy in Russia.
