The Biden administration announced on April 1 it is raising requirements for fuel efficiency, reversing a rollback by the Trump administration.
New vehicles sold in the United States will have to travel an average of at least 49 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026 under the new federal rules. The requirement would have been at 32 mpg if going by rules under the Trump administration.
Specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said fuel efficiency requirements will increase by 8 percent annually for 2024 and 2025 model years, and 10 percent annually for model year 2026.
The Trump administration had in March 2020 rolled back fuel efficiency requirements to 1.5 percent annual increases through 2026. The Obama administration had required 5 percent annual increases.
The new regulation (pdf) marks a slightly bigger increase than the proposal outlined in August 2021 by the NHTSA in a joint rule-making process with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of efforts to improve gas mileage and reduce tailpipe pollution.
The EPA announced similar rules (pdf) in December 2021.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the new rule “means that American families will be able to drive further before they have to fill up, saving hundreds of dollars per year.”

Why don’t they say 1000 miles per gallon?
Just as doable in the time frame.

But now the car will only carry 500 lbs. and will be so complicated that a tune up will cost $1000. Thanks, Buttcrack!

They dont want peopld to have reliable cars.
These smaller engines have turbos on them that will wear the out faster. They wind up running hotter and failing sooner. And then a turbopump fails and hoping no metal pieces go into the engine, and thats a couple grand to replace.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the new rule “means that American families will be able to drive further before they have to fill up, saving hundreds of dollars per year.” What transportation secretary Buttgieg didn't say is that actual families will be paying much more to ride in cars that are less safe and less reliable, or payong more to drive even bigger cars as the way car companies make these fake bake numbers is my mixing up their product lineups and eliminating the most cost and fuel efficient cars for families, and the current used car market is going to look like the golden years of used cars by comparison.

Used car prices are skyrocketing already.
These Biden mandates mean no 4000 lb. SUV and Vans
your cars will be powered by 4c cylinder engines
they will be made of light weight death trap plastic
this is foolish. These will be disposible cars
one fender bender and its a wreck for the junk
yard.
Insurance companies will have to raise rates
because cars will have to be replaced not fixed.

The ignorance and stupidity of liberals and Democrats still amaze me. They are one factor thinkers and NEVER look at the cost side of their idiot proposals and rules. In the fantasy land in which they dwell there are no costs.
One Cost (beyond their simian brains):
The Reason Foundation conducted a study in the late 80’s or early 90’s of the tradeoff between the reduction of vehicle weight to save gas vs the increase in the associated deaths and medical costs from the lighter and thus more risky and vulnerable vehicles. Their numbers indicated that the increased medical costs from injury and death were 5 times the savings in fuel.
With all of the brain fog and huge increase in driving deaths and injury I prefer driving my heaviest vehicle now.

And in order to do that, you’re going to have to pedal most of the way. I get annoyed driving behind Prius cars, slow as molasses as their drivers inch along to improve their mpg boasting. Gonna be a lot worse with newer vehicles inching along with gutless engines.
