In any war, there are units that distinguish themselves and others that become symbolic of failure. The 331st Guards Parachute Regiment had high hopes of being the first, but now represents the disintegration of Russia's plan for a quick war.
...
The men in the 331st regarded themselves as the pick of Russia's army. In a video posted online last May, a general tells soldiers of the 331st Parachute Regiment that they are "the best of the best". The unit served in the Balkans, Chechnya, and the 2014 Russian intervention in the Donbas region of Ukraine, and regularly took part in Red Square parades in Moscow.

Rob Lee:
“I wasn’t sure about many of the casualty estimates for Russian forces before, but, looking at the extent of the destroyed equipment and bodies of Russian soldiers being recovered by Ukrainian forces right now, the 10k KIA figure or higher wouldn’t be surprising.”
“CNN: Russia shifting strategy to Donbas and areas of eastern Ukraine for early May victory, CNN reports, citing U.S. officials.
The officials say Putin is under pressure for a victory and intercepted US intelligence suggests Putin is focused on May 9, Russia’s “Victory Day.””
“Britain is pushing to arm Ukraine with anti-ship missiles to sink Russian warships and relieve coastal cities being bombarded from the sea as part of a “gear change” in the West’s approach.
Boris Johnson has told ministers he wants to supply the weapons to prevent the Russians advancing on Odesa, just as British anti-tank missiles have been used to stall President Putin’s efforts to take Kyiv.”
Early on, FReepers were telling me this was Alabama vs Mercer.
But after a month, it looks more to me like Bowling Green vs. Akron.
Lots of Macho doesn’t make you Elite ,LOL
Smells like “Russia COLLOOOOOZHUN.”
Have to wonder what the Russian survivors are thinking.
They lost hundreds of men taking Bucha and Hostomel, and hundreds more holding those towns for a month.
Then Putin orders them to retreat and calls the assault on Kiev they died for a non-priority.
“Lots of Macho doesn’t make you Elite ,LOL”
For years there have internet posts boasting about the training of Russian troops. How they can take a bat to the chest and swim through ice water. Much tougher than an wimpy Americans.
It turns out that being able to take a bat to the chest rarely comes up in an actual war. It would have been better if they spent their time learning how to keep their gear in working order. (Which American soldiers spend endless time being trained on.)
Its okay, they are getting a medal. /s

BBC...hah!
The Russians are making up for it by planting landmines and murdering civilians. Defeated armies are always worse than victorious ones, and the victorious ones are bad enough.
Russian equipment is crap. What hasn’t been stolen and sold is so poorly maintained as to be useless. Their MREs are a decade out of date and have no doubt been stored so badly as to be inedible if not downright dangerous.
Their peasant conscript army is so piss poor that full bird Colonels and Generals have to lead from the front. Everything about the vaunted Russian military is a tissue of lies.
They’re so fricking stupid they dug trenches in a radiation zone.
They have to pay Chechen and Syrian savages to fight their war for them.
They’ve been “encircling” Kiev for 3 weeks.
I have no love for the Ukrainian government but the thought of Russia getting its ass handed to them makes me smile.

Meanwhile, the Russian media is transmitting pictures and reports of Ukrainian equipment and soldiers getting wiped out or surrendering.
Of course. It’s war.
Here’s some propaganda from the Russians:

Why do all these “reports” sound identical to the German’s reports of how they were retreating to draw the Red army into a trap?
I’m waiting for the pics of Putin water-skiing behind his mega yacht on the Dnieper through Kyiv.
Why do all these “reports” sound identical to the German’s reports of how they were retreating to draw the Red army into a trap?
This would be a huge game changer. It will happen.
