A draft security deal raised alarm in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare is trying to assuage those concerns.
Seeking to counter international fears over its new security alliance with China, the Solomon Islands said Friday it won’t allow China to build a military base there.
But that insistence will do little to ease concerns about the pact from the nation’s traditional partners, including New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
The leader of neighboring Micronesia added his voice to those expressing trepidation by invoking the bloody battles of World War II and warning that the pact could again see the South Pacific region become a battleground for much larger powers.

May end up not having much of a choice.
We believed you the first time.
Wait!!
If Ukraine is a “free and soveriegn state” and has the right to self determine if they want to be in NATO (according to us), then the Soloman Islands should be able to invite the Chinese.
We need to be consistent here!
Ironic how much blood the US spent taking the Solomon Islands and now China will get them. Soon every fish in those waters will be caught, shipped to China and consumed.
Australia and New Zealand where have you been for the last month? The “international community” has already decided that you can not dictate security conditions to another sovereign country.
Call Mr. Putin. He will tell you all about it.
Wait till they fall behind on their “Belt and Road” loan payments. Looks like the boys from Beijing just scored themselves a forward military base, along the main sea lanes from the U.S. to Australia.
Lest we forget, Japan’s decision to build an airbase on Guadalcanal (largest island in the Solomon chain) spurred the U.S. invasion in August 1942. The threat was deemed so serious that Nimitz and his staff put together the invasion plan in literally a matter of weeks.
The Solomon Islands will be under tyranny either way. They either get dominated by Fascist Australia, New Zealand or China. If they go it alone, it’s natives.
Freedom just isn’t in the cards there.
Not just fish. Any exploitable resource (oil maybe?) as well as a military perimeter.
