Editorial: Why do candidates for L.A. mayor have so little to say about climate change?
The Los Angeles Times ^ | April 1, 2022 | BY THE TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD

Los Angeles leaders have a history of making big pledges on climate change and the environment that are more ambitious than what they actually deliver.

But in the race to succeed Eric Garcetti as mayor, candidates are hardly even talking about climate and environmental issues and are instead focusing almost exclusively on housing, homelessness and crime.

L.A. needs a mayor that not only talks about climate change and environmental issues but also has clear and ambitious plans for accelerating action to reduce emissions and keep Angelenos safe from the escalating effects of a warming planet.

But the climate crisis has received little attention during mayoral forums and debates, and when it has come up, candidates have offered few new ideas.

Complaints about politicians overlooking climate issues are sadly nothing new. President Biden barely even mentioned climate change during his first State of the Union speech. But this is California, a state that prides itself on its environmental standards and climate leadership. Though more state and federal climate action is urgently needed, the mayor’s office can actually do a lot on its own.

Imagine that, politicos running on reality platforms instead of unicorn dreams.

“ candidates are hardly even talking about climate and environmental issues and are instead focusing almost exclusively on housing, homelessness and crime.“
Because the climate is not changing fast enough to make a difference for people who are alive today, because China and India emit twice as much CO2 as the US and they have no plan to stop doing it, and because crime hurts people now not in 100 years, and because the cost of renewable energy is so high that it causes poverty, leading to more homelessness and crime.

They will blame the next Big Earthquake on “climate change”—and the earthquake threat is very real...

Rush would often point out that in a real, serious poll, Globull Gloaming was not in the top 10 or 20 of concerns.

I have a homemade sign in my cubicle Large Carbon Footprints Make For Happy Trees. When anyone will listen, I describe the natural Carbon Cycle, the way we used to teach it. I also remind everyone that not so long ago Manhattan and most of New York was under a mile of ice. And, the next wave of cold is not only coming, there is NOTHING we can do to change it, but adapt, as we always have.

I also remind everyone that not so long ago Manhattan and most of New York was under a mile of ice.

Yep.

The last of at least five major ice ages over the past 2 billion years peaked about 20,000 years ago. During the last 10,000 years or so (which includes all of recorded human history), we have been living in a warm interglacial period. Based on geological evidence of prior glacial and interglacial periods, the average temperature on Earth could rise another ten degrees before it starts heading back down, or it could start heading back down tomorrow. Either way, we will have another ice age in 10,000 to 100,000 years or so (either is a short period of time in geological terms).

If we really tried, we could probably kill off most complex (multi-cellular) life on Earth, e.g., by setting off all of our nukes in a worldwide thermonuclear war, like an asteroid probably killed off most life on Earth at the end of the age of dinosaurs. Even if we really, really tried, however, we could not change Earth's climate for longer than a relatively short period of time (in geological terms) or have any real effect on the glacial and interglacial cycles, which began long before humans appeared and will continue long after we are gone.

Over 30 years ago, liberals were much more concerned with real pollution (stuff that can actually kill you) than they were with carbon emissions (which are necessary for the continued existence of all life on Earth). The answer of course was higher taxes and more government control of the economy! When the iron curtain fell and it became undeniable that the worst environmental hell holes on Earth were in the formerly communist countries, liberals stopped caring about actual pollution and started caring about carbon, which rich capitalist countries produce more of because we also produce more of everything else. The answer of course is higher taxes and more government control of the economy!
