New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to release 8,000 parolees from supervision by the end of March

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has announced they'll discharge eight thousand people on parole from supervision by March 31st.

This comes after Governor Kathy Hochul signed the "Less is More Act" back in September of 2021.

Eddie James Henley, who was sentenced to eight years for illegal firearm possession, says this will help move many forward.

"The main reason like myself have been violated for little or nothing," Henley says. "Like curfew or perhaps marijuana in their system. They're violated, but this will alleviate these guys going back to jail for small things.

Peaceprints of Western New York helped Henley to get back on his feet.

Henley now works at a truck company.

Peaceprints offers comprehensive re-entry services, including access to housing, mentoring, and food programs for those involved in the criminal justice system.

However, a Less is More Executive Team member says before this act, people of color would be incarcerated five times more than White people for technical violations of parole.

They believe this will help address racial disparities in our justice system.

Do people of color violate probation at 5xs the rate of Whites?

Eddie James Henley, who was sentenced to eight years for illegal firearm possession …
Now that is not illegal, but NY state’s laws thereof are unconstitutional.

They believe this will help address racial disparities in our justice system.

The racial disparities are based on who commits the crimes. Not social policy.

I don't see any mention in this article that the NY State Department of Corrections is closing six prisons in the State. More than likely, that's the reason for the release, not some bullshit Act she signed. The closings were announced in November of last year:

Six state prisons across New York to close in March

This is only the beginning. There will be more inmates released, and perhaps more prison closings. They let a bunch out during the lockdown, who weren't required to complete their sentences.

I stole this comment from another site:

"The U.S. doesn't have a race problem, it has a problem race."

...people of color would be incarcerated five times more than White people for technical violations of parole.

That’s because there are 5 times more of them in jail.

I am all for rehabilitation. But when I hear stories of “8 years for gun violation” they neglect to point out a decades long rap sheet of repeat offenses.

And I would venture a guess that blacks do commit more crime in NYC.

Now they can go back to jail for the big things.
