As bobo666 wrote, soldiers always complain about their food.
They standard warning in the officer corps is: when they stop complaining, start looking over your shoulder.
I found military food to be excellent. I wondered what the complaints were all about.
I concluded it was just something, anything, to complain about.
There is another consideration........ perhaps, the MRE’s ran out and none were forth coming making scrounging what was available became necessary
It’s possible the soldier was tied of the field rations and also out with no ore coming soon
