Trump says he's uninterested in being Speaker if GOP retakes House

Former President Trump said he was not interested in becoming the Speaker if Republicans retake the House in the 2022 midterm elections.

"No, I think that it's not something I wanted. A lot of people bring it up. It's brought up all the time. No, it's not something I want to do. I want to look at what's happening, and then we're going to be doing something else. No, it's not something I would be interested in," Trump said during an interview with John Solomon and Amanda Head of Just the News on Tuesday. Solomon is a former employee of The Hill.

Trump's remarks came after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said during a Trump rally in Commerce, Ga., on Saturday that he would nominate the former president to be Speaker of the House if Republicans win back the lower chamber.

"Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden, and I'm going to nominate Donald Trump for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives," the Florida Republican said, leading to a round of applause.

With Trump as high up in the Republican primary as he is, the speaker should go to an otherwise opponent as the only way to backdoor-into the presidency. Pompeo could be a good choice.

After the midterm drubbing that President Brandon is going to take, I expect he’ll go into semi-retirememnt at his Wilmington home. He can shout at the clouds in Delaware.

I agree with you. Why should he tie himself up with having to waste a large part of his day sitting in Congress with a bunch of traitors on both sides of the aisle, when he can be out, and about kicking as much ass as he wants.

"I totally think that McCarthy should continue in all his roles as speaker."

McCarthy is worthless like every Republican Speaker has been since Newt Gingrich left Congress.

Every freaking republican in the country wants to see Trump sitting behind Biden during Biden’s state of the union address.

I agree with you that it wouldn't be a sound move but I'd pay a lot of money to see that. A LOT of money.

"And he would be a great negotiator, which is actually an argument for why he should do it..."

If there is no Republican in the House right now that would be an effective leader, and negotiator, then why the hell are they in office to be begin with? It isn't Trump's responsibility to step in to take on that role. He already has responsibilities, and doesn't need to baby-sit a group of self-serving politicians on both sides of the aisle, who can't control themselves. Besides, Congressional Republicans are a bunch of pussies who historically turn victories, into defeat, so don't expect anything different if they do take back the House.

To be the speaker you have to be acceptable if not pleasing to a majority. Any principles one might have get blended into the principles of that majority which is already a blend or average of that majority. You become a “cat herder” at best a “yes man” to the majority at worst. It takes a very strong personality to do it optimally if it can even be done optimally.

The Rats do the better job of keeping their members in line because they do it the old fashioned way - they threaten and back up their threats. That being said, I do believe its easier for them because leftism is far more monolithic then it used to be. Rat reps arrive woke leftists. Any political independence has already been weeded out by the Rat primary process. If elected they're ready to march in step when their butt hits the seat.

” there is no Republican in the House right now that would be an effective leader, and negotiator, then why the hell are they in office to be begin with?”

~~~
This is a snide (not 100% serious) and cynical response, but the answer to your question is that they are there for the same reason all the democrats are there. They belong to the party bosses who got them there and if they play ball, they line their pockets (and their families pockets) very very well, get board positions after the return, and get lots of insider (trading) info for sitting on committees.
